SUMMARY OF JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Assists in preparation or revision of analytical procedures, sampling practices or equipment operating procedures that enhance the safety, data quality and operating effectiveness of the plant.
  • Communicates directly with manufacturers regarding calibration, maintenance, repair and purchase of analytical equipment.
  • Prepares samples, performs tests, records and reports data, makes all necessary mathematical calculations, and prepares or interprets charts and graphs.
  • Performs routine cleaning, minor maintenance and repair and calibration of sophisticated equipment utilized during the testing or collection of samples normally analyzed.
  • Operates, monitors, adjusts, calibrates, troubleshoots chemistry related monitoring equipment and the sewage treatment plant. Collects, analyzes, evaluates, tests, reports results of tests, submits work requests and initiates corrective action for pollution or environmentally related facilities, equipment or monitoring devices, sewage treatment disposal, industrial waste and other related systems in accordance with applicable local, state or federal regulations.
  • Corrects any condition, particularly unusual or abnormal, which may impact the quality of data and instrument operation.
  • Participates actively and contributes to plant safety through application of good housekeeping and common-sense hazard reporting while adhering to all safety and hygiene rules.
  • Inspects chemistry related equipment and inspects regular maintenance work (from a chemistry standpoint) and assists in troubleshooting water and chemical conditioning equipment. Issues work requests as required and helps coordinate work. Monitors equipment after maintenance or overhaul.
  • Trains other results personnel in all phases of their work and trains operations personnel in the chemistry areas of their responsibilities.
  • Performs routine and special procedures involving chemicals as required or as assigned, such as: collection and analysis of samples to assure plant safety and reliability.
  • Participates and assists in routine and special testing or evaluation of facilities and equipment affected by water, oil, coal or other chemicals.
  • Monitors water cycle clean-up during unit start-up or other unusual times when close surveillance of cycle water is necessary. Determines and advises the operating department when water quality meets requirements for firing up boilers, etc.
  • Recommends corrective action to supervision for controlling or alleviating water-related pollution or other environmental incidents that are encountered in the performance of their job duties.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or as necessary.

MINIMUM ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

  • Associate degree in Chemistry or associate degree in related field (related degree defined as 24 science or math credits of which at least 6 are chemistry credits, at least 6 are math or computer science credits and 12 other science/engineering credits) from an accredited school/program.
  • Must possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license.
  • Ability and temperament to withstand extensive periods of tedious work while adhering to prescribed procedures.
  • Physically able to withstand outdoor exposure and power plant environment while performing certain year-round duties.
  • Successful completion of the EEI Technician Occupations Selection System aptitude test.
  • Working knowledge of chemistry and laboratory procedures.
  • Working knowledge of plant operations and functions, especially water treating equipment of all types.
  • Ability to obtain Pennsylvania DEP operating licenses for sewage treatment plants and waterworks at the certification level required to operate these facilities at the work location.
