RTDS® Simulator's innovative Universal Converter Model sets new standard for real-time power electronics simulation

July 12, 2021

The RTDS® Simulator is used for closed-loop testing of an AVR one of many applications for power electronics models

The RTDS® Simulator is used by leading utilities, manufacturers, consultants, research institutes, and universities worldwide for real-time power electronics simulation and hardware-in-the-loop testing of converter controls. The 2021 release of RTDS Technologies' Universal Converter Model (UCM) has raised the standard for accuracy, flexibility, and accessibility of real-time converter modelling.

The UCM overcomes many challenges associated with real-time electromagnetic transient power electronics simulation. The model has multiple input options: modulation waveform, traditional firing pulse input, or an innovative new Improved Firing option. With Improved Firing, the model captures firing pulses (from an external physical controller or from within the simulation) at a high resolution, and calculates a duty cycle for the switch. This allows for multiple on/off transitions within a simulation timestep, allowing the model to perform accurate high-frequency switching. The UCM is not decoupled from the surrounding network, meaning it is more numerically stable, and it does not use an L/C switching approach, meaning it is more accurate and output waveforms have less noise. It is currently available for two-level, NPC, T-type, boost, and buck topologies.

The Improved Firing algorithm allows for accurate representation of converter performance with PWM firing at over 100 kHz. The Substep environment, with simulation timesteps typically in the 1 to 10 microsecond range, it used to achieve this. The Improved Firing feature can also be used to accurately represent firing at over 3 kHz in the Mainstep environment (25 to 50 microseconds). Users with entry-level simulator hardware configurations will now be able to run simulations that include many converters with full switching detail.

The UCM can be used for studying the impact of converter-interfaced resources (such as renewables) on the grid, testing grid-forming control and other novel protection and automation applications, drive simulation and control testing, and more. It is available now in the RSCAD simulation software.
