NEW BRUNSWICK
Nuclear support partnership between New Brunswick and Ontario

October 27, 2025

A new partnership announced on October 24 by energy ministers from New Brunswick and Ontario will provide expertise and operational support for the Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station.

The support services agreement was signed between Laurentis Energy Partners, an Ontario Power Generation subsidiary, and NB Power.

"New Brunswick and Ontario are known across Canada and around the world for their accomplishments in nuclear power generation," said Energy Minister René Legacy. "This partnership will bolster that reputation and, more importantly, allow our two provinces to strengthen a promising working relationship for years to come."

Ontario and New Brunswick are the only provinces currently generating electricity from nuclear energy. Combined, the provinces have more than 100 years of nuclear experience to share and build upon.

"Ontario is proud to lead the world in nuclear excellence - and we're now exporting that expertise to help New Brunswick succeed," said Ontario Energy and Mines Minister Stephen Lecce. "This historic partnership with New Brunswick helps ensure energy reliability for their customers, while reinforcing Ontario's position as Canada's clean energy engine. By working together, we are protecting both our economies, creating new commercial opportunities and jobs, and powering a stronger Canadian energy future."

Under the agreement, Laurentis will provide expertise to improve performance at the Point Lepreau generating station. This consists of:

  • performance benchmarking and excellence planning
  • structured performance oversight
  • on-site support and collaboration
  • flexible support services
  • personnel development

The ministers agree that energy is a national priority. By strengthening this nuclear alliance, Legacy said, New Brunswick and Ontario can eliminate another interprovincial wall and, together, play a key role in supporting energy needs at home and across the country.
