Under the general supervision of the Supervisor Central Projects, the Design Specialist/Technologist is responsible for designing or applying a standard design to a diverse range of distribution projects. This position will be accountable for the design of any type and/or size of project including projects requiring use of computer software to help with technical calculations and/or for projects requiring technical field skills to validate the design.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE (but not limited to):
- Confirm scope, prepare or provide input to estimates on a diverse range of distribution projects.
- Ensure the accuracy of all project data in SAP, AM/FM and the project management tool.
- Travel and perform field checks as required.
- Perform Risk and Hazard Assessments.
- Stake and locate new services, as required.
- Identify possible environmental concerns and initiate Environmental Field Reports.
- Apply standards and check designs based on codes and current engineering policies.
- Use of computer software to complete technical calculations to validate design.
- Coordinate the installation and commissioning of distribution equipment.
- Provide informal coaching and guidance to other projects team members.
- Provide technical guidance to customers, stakeholders, and external consultants.
- Responsible for coordinating and scheduling a diverse range of distribution projects.
- Provide excellent customer service by communicating with customers on design requirements and following through with customer design concerns to resolution.
- Participate on committees, special projects, and business process teams.
- Special projects or other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

- Working knowledge of SAP, AM/FM, MS Office, ALD, GNet, Pipeline Research, SPIN (Survey Plan Indexing Network) as well as, other related design programs.
- Knowledge of all applicable codes, acts, and regulations as they apply to the electric utility industry.
- Knowledge of Highway Traffic accommodation requirements.
- Knowledge of Land Survey Act.
- Staking and surveying skills.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- An Electrical Engineering Technology diploma is required, however a Civil or Mechanical Engineering Technology diploma with 4 years direct electrical industry experience may be considered.
- A valid Class 5 Alberta Motor Vehicle driver's license is required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- A Project Management certificate is considered an asset.
- A Certified Engineering Technologist (CET) designation or a Professional Technologist designation is considered an asset.
- A Journeyman Power Line Technician or Power Systems Electrician certificate is considered an asset.
Special Conditions:
- Due to geographic considerations travel, including overnight, is required.
- This has been identified as a safety-sensitive position. All successful candidates will be subject to a pre-employment drug and alcohol test.
