ABOUT THE ROLE
TransAlta is looking for a Commercial Specialist to join our Commercial team. Reporting to the Commercial Manager, you will play a key role in providing commercial support primarily for TransAlta's Alberta business. This includes building commercial relationships with external customers and partners, internal stakeholders, contract management and evaluation, and negotiating and executing business opportunities that maximize the value of TransAlta's assets.
This position is based out of our Downtown Calgary Head Office, with the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule.
A DAY IN THE LIFE
- As the customer or Joint Venture (JV) relationship owner, build and maintain strong customer and JV relationships while collaborating with internal teams to maximize asset value and returns.
- Act as a customer ambassador, ensuring competitive operating decisions and alignment across operations and corporate groups.
- Develop and lead commercial strategies, including business cases, negotiations, amendments, and renewals.
- Secure and grow revenue opportunities, while managing risks and resolving commercial issues or disputes.
- Interpret market changes and financial modeling outcomes, communicating insights clearly to support decisions and negotiations.
- Ensure contract compliance, accurate invoicing, and adherence to regulatory and SOX requirements.
- Complete commercial due diligence of potential acquisitions and oversee commercial integration of new assets.
- Represent TransAlta in customer and partner engagements, building trust and influencing stakeholders.
ABOUT YOU
- Post-secondary education in business, finance, economics, or engineering preferred, with strong commercial and financial acumen.
- 6+ years in commercial management, business development, contract negotiation, or similar roles, ideally in the energy industry.
- Expertise in deal creation, negotiation, contract management, and relationship building.
- Solid understanding of power and gas markets/contracts, energy fundamentals, and ability to develop and present business cases.
- Ability to interpret financial modeling outcomes (EBITDA, GM, Revenue, NPV), understand business implications, and clearly communicate insights for decision-making and negotiations.
- Ability to interpret complex contracts, assess business impacts, balance risk/reward trade-offs, and to use this information to lead negotiations.
- Demonstrated drive for continuous improvement, execution mindset, and creative problem-solving.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills; capable of influencing and building trust across stakeholders.
- Expertise in taking a collaborative approach to managing cross-functional projects without formal authority.
- Strong ethical standards with commitment to TransAlta policies, procedures, and all applicable regulatory and legal requirements across operating regions
- Willingness to travel and provide after-hours support as needed.
Nice to Have
- Experience with gas cogeneration facilities, particularly an understanding of their operations and the contractual frameworks governing relationships with customers and partners is considered a strong asset.
