Provides professional engineering service and support in the planning, construction, operation, maintenance, and analysis of PSE facilities and assets. Schedules and coordinates major segments of complex projects to meet cost and time objectives. Reviews design and documentation to ensure compliance with PSE expectations. Interprets and applies existing guidelines and engineering principles, practices, and theories toward the completion of assignments involving a substantial degree of complexity, with many interrelated elements requiring considerations not previously encountered. Supports the continued development of PSE's engineering workforce by sharing knowledge with others.  Supports emergency response operations when needed.

Upholds the safety compliance standards inherent in PSE's operating and/or field procedures related to work responsibilities. Promotes and supports a culture of total safety.

This position may be subject to random DOT drug and/or alcohol testing. This job is considered "safety sensitive" as defined in RCW 49.44.240 and is subject to pre-employment drug screening that includes screening for the presence of marijuana and marijuana metabolites.

Specific Job Description

Puget Sound Energy's Gas System Engineering (GSE) department is looking for an Engineer II to join our team.  GSE provides engineering analysis and design, construction and operations support, to ensure safety, reliability, integrity and capacity of PSE's natural gas system. Frequent duties of the Engineer II include:

  • Applying PSE standards and engineering principles to design high pressure pipelines, regulator stations, odorization equipment, and other complex installations throughout the gas service territory;
  • Collaborating with a wide range of stakeholders and subject matter experts to solve complex technical issues;
  • Prioritizing and managing work to drive PSE initiatives;
  • Providing technical engineering services to other PSE departments (e.g., preparing technical procedures for field operations, troubleshooting systems, equipment or facility abnormalities);
  • Performing research in response to technical issues and reporting on findings to diverse audiences;
  • Supporting emergency response operations during or after office hours when called upon; and

The ideal candidate will possess a combination of strong communication skills, proficiency working within a team and developing relationships with peers, and technical knowledge about the design and construction of natural gas infrastructure.

Job Responsibilities

  • Works on projects that are often composed of many interrelated elements.
  • Interprets requirements and application of company and industry standards, guidelines, and methods.
  • Applies engineering principles, practices, theories.
  • Creates and reviews cost estimates, and provides economic analysis for project alternatives.
  • Plans and develops project budgets with appropriate documentation.
  • Identifies potential areas of weakness with assigned work, and initiates corrective action.
  • Ensures compliance with codes, standards, and design requirements.
  • Supports emergency response work as requested including immediate and extended restoration efforts driven by weather and other system failures.
  • May coordinate the work of engineering assistants, technicians, or others who assist in specific assignments (including contractors/consultants).
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree or PE license in electrical, mechanical, civil or other appropriate engineering field
  • Experience in planning, design, specification preparation, technical field work, project cost estimating and scheduling (typically achieved after 3 or more years practice as a degreed engineer).  Years of acquired experience is provided as a guide and alone does not constitute readiness for job level as individual's skill acquisition rates can vary significantly.
  • Organization, documentation, prioritization, and project management skills.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience working with both internal and external customers on projects.
  • Familiar with codes and equipment utilized in the design and operation of utility systems.
  • Experience with coordinating external consultants in the execution of a project.
  • Possession of EIT certificate and ability to acquire PE license.
  • Knowledge of engineering economics and utility accounting practices.
