Engineer III | Renewable Generation Engineering
Arizona Public Service (APS) is seeking a skilled and motivated Engineer III to join our Renewable Generation Engineering team, where you'll play an essential role in ensuring the reliability, implementation, and operation of our utility-scale solar, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), and microgrid assets. As part of this team, you'll work closely with interdisciplinary groups to optimize system performance, manage critical loads, and drive operational continuity. The ideal candidate will bring experience with utility-scale solar, BESS, microgrid design or operation, and diesel generators, along with a collaborative approach that enhances reliability and drives innovative solutions.
Key Responsibilities:
Technical Engineering & Design Support: Provide technical engineering, design, economic, and analytical expertise to support long-range system planning and project development.
Reliability & System Optimization: Ensure high reliability and continuity across utility-scale solar, BESS, and microgrid systems, implementing preventative and corrective measures for critical loads. Monitor and improve system efficiency through data analysis and performance testing, driving enhancements in renewable energy output.
Cross-functional Collaboration: Work closely with interdisciplinary teams, including operations, maintenance, and planning, to align on project objectives and technical requirements.
Engineering Analysis & Problem-Solving: Apply advanced engineering methods and analysis to assess system performance, address operational challenges, and support engineering requests, proposals, and presentations.
Project Involvement: Participate in engineering projects that require effective problem-solving skills, economic considerations, and the ability to synthesize complex data for internal presentations and proposals.
The ideal candidate will have:
- Experience in utility-scale solar, BESS, or microgrid engineering, with a proven record of enhancing system reliability and operational efficiency.
- Strong technical knowledge of renewable energy systems, including BESS, solar energy, and microgrids, with experience in diesel generator integration preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within cross-functional teams to achieve project objectives and resolve complex challenges.
- A track record of applying engineering methods to solve technical problems, optimize performance, and support strategic decision-making.
- The capacity to handle both the technical and analytical aspects of engineering tasks, with skills in data analysis, performance testing, and economic evaluation of projects.
- Effective communication skills, with experience presenting technical findings and recommendations to diverse internal teams.
- Has increasing responsibility for technical decisions and interpretations.
- Provides technical guidance and leadership to others as needed.
Minimum Requirements
Minimum Qualifications:
- A Bachelors degree (4 years) in an engineering discipline or related applied science discipline (see approved list) from an ABET accredited institution, an International Engineering Alliance (IEA) recognized institution or an ABET Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) PLUS
- Five (5) years working experience in Engineering-related positions.
Preferred Skills, Knowledge or Qualifications:
- Problem analysis/resolution techniques.
- Knowledge of applicable codes, standards, practices, methods and safety standards in the area of applicable engineering discipline.
- Experience in the utility industry.
- Professional Engineer licensure.
- May be subject to shift work.
Approved Engineer degrees:
Materials Science/Metallurgy, Physics, Chemistry, Math, Nuclear, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Electronics, Computer Science, Environmental, Chemical, Architectural, Structural.
(A four-year bachelor of Engineering Technology degree is not considered an automatic equivalent for a B.S. degree in Engineering. A review of the degree program curriculum must be completed by Engineering department management.)
