Maintains some of the most important, expensive, and sensitive equipment CPS Energy operates for Power Generation. Responsible for the installation and maintenance of DCS control systems, Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems, Water Quality Analysis Systems at all Power Plants. Performs new control system installations, critical loop calibrations and plant performance testing. Maintains generator voltage regulators, PLC's, demineralizers, and other environmental control equipment that is analyzed by the EPA. Assist with Cyber Security of all computers connected to the control systems. The Technicians are required to be available 24/7 for emergency repairs on boilers, turbine/generators and coal conveyor systems. This position is necessary to meet additional work scope for compliance with NERC standards.
Tasks and Responsibilities
- Tests and maintain new and existing control equipment to include the condition of the primary and secondary outputs, linearization of signals, temperature compensation constants, and polarity.
- Tests, commissions, and troubleshoots Programmable Logic Schemes for Power Generation control circuits to include but not limited to turbine control systems, distributed control systems, demineralizer control systems, continuous emission monitoring systems (CEMS), and various other power generation equipment.
- Reviews, updates all power generation electrical schematic drawings to include A.C., D.C., wiring diagrams, interconnect drawings, etc., and determine whether they are consistent with CPS Energy's design philosophy and make corrections in the field.
- Operates, commissions, and tests low and medium voltage electrical equipment from 24 VDC, 125 VDC, 120V, 480V, and 4160V systems to include but not limited to motor-operated valves, variable frequency drives, motor-operated disconnects, and various types of signal conditioners.
- Completes test forms and enters test results to keep records up to date and stay in compliance with the Texas Reliability Entity and Texas Department of Licensing Regulations
- Coordinates between other departments to ensure that jobs are completed with the least amount of disruption to customers or the electric system.
- Perform Federally Mandated (NERC) testing/training on Various Systems according to NERC PRC-005 standards and document results.
- Perform 24-7 Call-Duty on a rotational basis to determine equipment condition during outages and abnormal system conditions.
- Provides oversight and commissioning approval of all crafts for power generation capital projects prior to the release of equipment.
- Troubleshoots, repairs, and makes technical recommendations to electricians and area leadership of electrical and control failures in Power Generation Plants.
- Performs calibration and maintenance on CEMS analyzers ( Nox, CO2, SO2,O2,HG,CO, Mass Flow and Opacity) Perform calibration and maintenance on water quality analyzers ( Dissolved Oxygen, PH, Conductivity, Chloride, Sodium, and Silica).
- Provides QA/QC for work of contractors to ensure standards are met.
- Provide field engineering support and training to electricians, foremen, and other departments in the wiring and commissioning of the power generation equipment and control systems.
- Perform tasks in inclement weather and hazardous environments.
- Specialized training as required for advancement within the department.
- Interfaces with other Plant Operations and Maintenance personnel in operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting related systems.
- Provide knowledgeable response to all power plant system issues pertaining to system performance, shutdowns, startups, and failed equipment diagnosis.
- Plan outage work scope for instrumentation and controls and work extended hours to meet plant needs.
Minimum Skills
Minimum Knowledge and Abilities
Proficient ability to perform maintenance and calibrations on pressure transmitters, level transmitters, flow transmitters, pressure switches, thermocouples, RTD's and Smart instrumentation devices (HART protocol).
Proficient ability to operate instrumentation test equipment.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Package, including word processing, spreadsheets, database, presentation software, electronic mail and scheduling.
Solid knowledge of the principles, practices, and equipment associated with the installation, calibration, and maintenance of industrial instrumentation.
Solid knowledge of the standard practices and terminology of the electrical trade.
Solid knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions required in the work.

Must have completed I&C Technician progression plan requisites for consideration to I&C Technician III at CPS Energy or have completed an equivalent plan in a power generation or other industrial environment.
Successful completion of the following training courses and qualifiers are part of the requirements for maintaining I&C Technician III and eligibility for consideration for promotion to System Specialist:
Process Control, Process Control Qualifier, Motor Operated Valves, Circuit Wiring, Allen Bradley RSLogix PLC, Allen Bradley RSLogix PLC Qualifier, Required safety & regulatory classes.
