Description

Position Summary

The Electric Planning Policy & Modernization (EPPM) team is looking for an intern to support the development and enhancement of distribution planning tools based on advanced automated analytics of PG&E's distribution grid. The successful intern will be interested in learning how PG&E plans for Distributed Energy Resources (e.g., solar PV, energy storage, energy efficiency, and demand response) and can use analytical tools to clearly represent our planning processes and enable strategies to execute our portfolio of work to internal and external stakeholders. 

The successful intern will help EPPM drive numerous initiatives including but not limited to: 

  • Statistical data analysis and data validation to support publication of the data on a public map that includes information for the use of Distributed Energy Resources developers.  

  • Extract information from various databases for analysis to answer key business questions. 

  • Help identify improvements in distribution grid modeling and simulations. 

  • Help develop automated tools to efficiently perform distribution planning process.  

  • Explore, innovate, and demonstrate technologies that facilitate easier grid integration and modernization. 

  • Analyze and synthesize various data streams to support the publication of data from PG&E's annual distribution planning process. 

  • The publication of an annual Grid Needs Assessment (GNA) and Distribution Upgrade Project Report (DUPR) that brings transparency into capacity deficiencies and the project investment plan to address them.  

  • Examine and document the methods by which to include known load applications from customers into the distribution load forecast 

  • Leveraging diverse datasets across PG&E to visualize distribution, transmission, and generation capacity project execution process, portfolio, and metrics.  

The successful intern will have the opportunity to lead and/or support activities as described above working with a team of experienced Engineers and Analysts. Additionally, the intern will gain knowledge of the larger Electric Engineering organization through the work they will be performing.

PG&E is providing the hourly rate range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job.  The actual hourly rate paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity.

The hourly rate for this position ranges from $24.52 to $35.37.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Earning a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Environmental Science, or related field (students MUST be continuing education towards degree during and/or after internship) 

Desired:

  • 3.0 GPA or greater in both cumulative GPA and major GPA
  • Expertise in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word
  • Familiarity with python and SQL scripts
  • Ability to work in a team environment and support fellow team members
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills 
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written
  • Familiarity with large databases and data analytics is a plus.   
  • Electrical Engineering background, particularly power system engineering, is a plus.
