Summary

The Senior Fleet Engineer acts as a point of contact for both internal and external stakeholders for Oncor Vehicles. Provides mechanical and technical knowledge of vehicles, including design, industry and safety standards, performance, quality assurance, and vendor capabilities. Supports the Oncor Fleet Manager in creating the annual vehicle replacement plan and communicating with stakeholders on vehicle ordering processes. Manages the vehicle spec review process by engaging with internal stakeholders to drive increased safety vehicle performance and ensure consistency of vehicle design. Manages the bid evaluation process with vehicle upfit vendors to provide the best value for the Oncor fleet. Responsible for maintaining adequate files, retaining pertinent info on vehicles, and updating the catalog of vehicle specifications, including design drawings and technical schematics. Fosters strong partnerships with chassis manufacturers, dealers, and upfitter suppliers (e.g., aerial equipment, service body). Manages the process for final vehicle inspections to ensure vehicle quality before delivery of vehicles to internal Oncor customers. Manages the process of submitting vehicle invoices before the vehicle lease process starts.

Key Roles & Responsibilities (Directly or through others, the incumbent):

  • Leads by example through incorporating a safety focus and culture into the daily work ethic.
  • Coordinates execution of the Oncor Vehicle replacement plan:  vehicle ordering, inspections, delivery, and invoicing.
  • Works closely with internal Operational stakeholders to develop replacement strategies and innovative equipment solutions.
  • Participates in bid evaluations and projects that ensure the best fit with vendor designs and performance expectations.
  • Conduct in-person/virtual vehicle inspections at vendor locations to verify that the vehicles' upfitting aligns with quotes and vehicle specifications expectations.
  • Assist the Manager of the Fleet in driving for a positive total cost of ownership (TCO) and vendor performance by monitoring vehicle quality and performance. Develops and provides reports to aid in monitoring and analyzing supplier performance.
  • Maintain market intelligence regarding equipment/vehicle cost, features/upgrades (e.g., EVs), and service performance.
  • Stay up-to-date of DOT and local State requirements for vehicle weight (e.g., Bridge Laws), licensing, and registration.
  • Provides technical expertise, consultation, documentation, and support regarding vehicle accident investigations.
  • Provide ad-hoc training and instruction to other Oncor Fleet Department or internal Oncor employees.
  • Actively support and promote Oncor's supplier diversity program with the selection of vendors.
  • Performs all essential aspects/functions of the job, as well as any other job requirements that arise as business needs evolve.

Education, Experience, & Skill Requirements

  • Education -A bachelor's degree or equivalent experience is preferred.
  • Five years of automotive or fleet management experience is required; experience in the utility industry (e.g., electric and gas) is preferred.
  • Skill - General business knowledge, excellent written and oral communication with internal and external stakeholders. Intermediate to advanced Microsoft Excel (e.g., Pivot) capabilities, working knowledge of SharePoint, ability to work with and manage confidential information, problem-solving, conflict resolution, ability to multi-task and work in a team environment, demonstrates Oncor core values, including ethical conduct, intensity, respect, excellence, and innovation.

Measures of Success

  • Executes the orders for Oncor's annual vehicle plan. Ensures all equipment is delivered effectively, efficiently, and safely.
  • Vehicle and outfitting decisions reflect a commitment to safety and the total cost of ownership (TCO), not just pricing.
  • Consistently responsive to internal and external stakeholders; fosters positive and collaborative partnerships with stakeholders.
  • Drives strategic objectives to ensure vehicle specifications meet or exceed regulatory and Oncor safety requirements.
  • Achieves internal deadlines and holds manufacturers and suppliers accountable for their deadlines.
  • Viewed as a subject matter expert for fleet systems knowledge, vehicle performance, and vehicle specifications.
  • Leads the annual vehicle spec reviews with internal employees, driving for safety performance and innovation.
