Summary
- The SOSF Chemist performs analytical testing of samples and maintains laboratory equipment to support the operation at SOSF Laboratory. This includes 24/7 support of emergency situations. Environmental test results are used to comply with regulations and can have a significant financial impact on the company. Other test results are used to determine the condition of substation transformers and can impact costly assets and electric service reliability. The Chemist takes on greater responsibility of the laboratory by participating in industry organizations, maintaining LIMS, performing documented safety checks and aids the Laboratory Manager in maintaining the integrity of the lab.
Key Roles & Responsibilities
Directly or through others, the incumbent:
- Performs analytical testing of insulating oil and PCB samples.
- Calibrates and maintains laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
- Interacts with clients to provide technical advice on analytical needs and data interpretation.
- Maintains necessary documentation to comply with regulatory requirements and good laboratory practices.
- Provides after-hours support of clients' testing needs.
- Ships out sampling supplies and receives samples.
- Recognizes the properties and hazards of all chemicals used in the lab and ensures their safe handling and proper storage and disposal.
- Provides backup support for lab data entry and reporting.
- Demonstrates safe work practices.
- Performs other duties as may be assigned.
- Maintains and operates the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and recommends upgrades to the system to effect greater efficiencies in laboratory operations.
- Aids the SOSF Laboratory Manager in evaluating and selecting laboratory equipment and supplies to ensure effective, efficient, and economical laboratory operations.
- Maintain and help establish standard procedures, documentation, and quality assurance practices to ensure quality test results. Ensures timely and accurate submission of reports to achieve compliance with regulatory requirements, and to support system operation and maintenance needs.
- Participates in industry organizations to stay abreast of laboratory issues.
- Performs maintenance on instrumentation with guidance from Chemist Sr or Lead Chemist.
- Performs documented routine safety checks of the laboratory.
Education, Experience, & Skills
Chemist
- Education and Experience-Four year college degree in Chemistry, a two year college degree in Chemistry with a minimum of 4 years experience in analytical Chemistry, or a High School diploma or GED and 6 years experience in analytical Chemistry.
- Skills- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.
- Must possess and demonstrate the ability to effectively communicate to staff, peers, and Oncor Leadership.
- The incumbent must be self-motivated, and have the ability to use sound, fair, judgment and to make decisions in the absence of supervision.
- Must be organized, can prioritize task, and anticipate problems and adjust accordingly.
- Must possess a dedication for personal safety and utilize safe work practices.
Chemist-Staff
- Education and Experience- Four-year college degree in Chemistry with a minimum of 4 years of experience in analytical Chemistry; Two-year college degree in Chemistry with a minimum of 6 years of experience in analytical Chemistry; or High School diploma or GED with 8 years of experience in analytical Chemistry.
- Skills- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.
- Experience in analytical programs (ex. OpenLab and Chemstation).
- Must possess and demonstrate the ability to effectively communicate to staff, peers, and Oncor Leadership.
- The incumbent must be self-motivated, and have the ability to use sound, fair, judgment and to make decisions in the absence of supervision.
- Must be organized, can prioritize task, and anticipate problems and adjust accordingly.
- Working knowledge/experience in Gas Chromatography.
- Must possess a dedication for personal safety and utilize safe work practices.
Measures of Success
