DESCRIPTION:
Under the general supervision of the Supervisor Project Execution, the Project Manager is accountable for managing the delivery of quality electric distribution projects (greater than $500k, politically sensitive and/or complex in nature). This position will ensure that these projects are executed on schedule, within budget, while meeting customer and stakeholder requirements. The Project Manager will demonstrate effective proactive leadership, problem solving strategies and practices, while effectively using internal and external resources in the delivery of projects.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE (but not limited to):
Accountable for the delivery of all aspects of a project; this includes developing project scope, estimating costs setting objectives and goals, planning, scheduling and utilizing resources, forecasting costs, material forecasting, monitoring progress and measuring performance, documentation and reporting, and project conclusion (including financial close).
Provide leadership with respect to cost control measures and project reporting requirements that adhere to the strict requirements of SOX.
Approve change order requests and ensure that project documentation meets SOX reporting requirements.
Manage complex large projects ranging from $500k to several million dollars in value.
Contribute to the change, development, and management of delivery of non-standard and/or ambiguous project requirements and requests.
Recognize, evaluate, and mitigate risks though the life of the project.
Work with Stakeholder Relations to manage the expectations of FortisAlberta's largest customers with respect to the successful delivery of large distribution projects, project milestones, and deadlines.
Build and maintain important customer relationships due to the high profile nature of these projects.
Build and maintain excellent working relationships with internal and external stakeholder relationships; this includes communicating effectively and managing expectations.
Contribute to the development, documentation and implementation of project management policies, procedures, best practices and new standards.
Effectively develop and manage Contracts and Contractors.
Provide informal leadership and training to work teams and individuals.
Coach and develop competencies of other Projects employees in the areas of Project Management, design, project cost control, rates and contracts, estimating and networking skills.
Special projects or other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
Advanced knowledge of distribution line design, estimating, distribution operation and construction principles.
Working knowledge of substation and transmission line construction and operating principles.
Comprehensive understanding of various project management tools and techniques.
Advanced working knowledge of all aspects of project reporting including: CMS systems, cost, variance, accrual, certification and closure.
Advanced working knowledge of the Project Management Knowledge areas.
Thorough understanding of applicable standards, codes, regulations and third party agreements (e.g. REA, joint-use, municipal, crown and licensing agreements).
Thorough knowledge of utility accounting systems and FortisAlberta business practices.
Proven ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders; this includes excellent customer service, interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
Strong oral and written communication skills with a proven ability to deliver effective presentations and reports.
Excellent organizational and time management skills, to manage multiple and diverse projects concurrently.
Strong analytical skills required to resolve issues and evaluate possible solutions.
Proven ability to lead and work within a team environment; this includes engaging cross-functional teams of internal and external participants and stakeholders.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
A Diploma in Electrical, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering Technology plus a minimum of six (6) years of direct project management industry related experience and/or Electrical Distribution Utilities design experience; or
A Diploma in Electrical, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering Technology plus a minimum of six (6) years of industry related experience with a minimum of four (4) of the six (6) years of experience in a FortisAlberta Design Specialist/Technologist or Construction/Project Planner position, or
A journeyman Power Line Technician (PLT) certificate plus a minimum of six (6) years of industry related experience with a minimum of four (4) of the six (6) years of experience in a Construction Coordinator Major Projects, Area Coordinator Unit Price or Construction Foreman role, a Design Specialist/Technologist, or a Construction/Project Planner role.
Project Management Professional (PMP) certification from the Project Management Institute (PMI) or equivalent certification is required.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
A valid Class 5 driver's license is required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
A Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) or Professional Technologist (P.Tech) designation is considered an asset.
Experience working in a team environment on large projects is considered an asset.
Experience working in a regulated environment is an asset.
Special Conditions:
Due to geographic considerations travel, including overnight, is required.
