Performs a variety of duties related to the installation, operation, repair, and maintenance of overhead and/or underground distribution systems, transmission facilities, networks, automatic throw-over switches, street light systems, power plants and wind farms to provide continuous and dependable electric service to customers.

LEVEL OF RESPONSIBILITY

The apprentice level is a training program consisting of classes, Computer Based Curriculum and on-the-job training to obtain the qualifications to achieve the journey (fully qualified) level of the job. As training is satisfactorily completed and performance meets expectations, the apprentice moves to higher levels of responsibility and correspondingly higher pay until the journey level is achieved.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Members in the apprentice program perform duties related to the craft and consistent with their achieved level within the program which may include:

Construct and maintain underground network electric distribution systems in accordance with approved safety standards and work methods: Install, repair and/or remove conductors, transformers, capacitors, self-contained meters, network, automatic throw-over equipment, services, and security/street lights.

Extend and rebuild the distribution system based on engineering drawings in accordance with Approved Construction Standards, which includes construction of large vaults.

Perform troubleshooting and service restoration in emergency situations resulting from equipment or cable failure, vehicle accidents, severe weather, etc.

Construct and maintain underground network distribution system in accordance with approved safety standards and work methods: Perform appropriate switching to de-energize facilities and/or re-route current to allow service continuity and safe job performance.

Perform substation switching for the network and automatic throw-over system.

Install and repair all types of primary cable, risers, switch cubicles, automatic throw-over, network switches, and make associated terminations on underground distribution systems.

Install and repair transformers, secondary cable, risers, pedestals, underground services and self contained meters to residential, commercial and industrial customers.

Locate and repair underground faults on primary and secondary circuits.

Utilize equipment, materials and manpower in a safe, efficient and effective manner and maintain accurate records of work performed: Complete time sheets, Equipment Failure Reports, Meter Orders, and other appropriate documentation in a timely and accurate manner.

Inspect, maintain, and test tools, ladders, hotsticks, and all other individually assigned equipment.

Maintain positive relationships with contacts inside and outside the Company: Contact customers in a courteous manner regarding service installation, repairs, interruptions, etc., and assure a positive company image is projected.

Maintain positive working relationships with Company departments and staff, ensuring appropriate and timely transaction of information and services.

Maintain and operate assigned vehicle used in performance of duties: Arrange for regular and timely servicing of vehicle.

Maintain and store vehicle in clean and proper working order.

Operate radio to receive and/or transmit job related information.

Operate hydraulic boom to move heavy loads, dig holes, and set poles.

Attend and participate in safety meetings, schools and training sessions regarding safe and proper performance.

REQUIREMENTS

High School Diploma/GED and a Valid Class A CDL with DOT certification and no restrictions against driving a manual shift vehicle.

Required to maintain permanent residence within a 45 minute driving time to assigned service center.

If you do not possess a CDL, you have 60 days to obtain a permit and 180 days to receive the license.
