Qualifications:

Selection Criteria

- Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Required for Selection: Must have good technical, project management, organizational, verbal and written communications skills.

- Knowledge of power engineering principles, and engineering computer applications such as WinIGS, AutoCAD, MAPPS and MLOG.

- Knowledge of electric transmission and power system operations and design and applicable codes from standards making organizations such as NESC, OSHA, NFPA, and IEEE.

- General knowledge of, State and Federal regulations and codes of conduct, and NERC and RFC policies and Company procedures.

- Ability to read and interpret various types of drawings and solve problems.

- Knowledge normally acquired through a BS degree in Electrical Engineering required.

Level 1 Substation Engineer/Specialist

Bachelor's of Science degree in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology (preferred) or Electrical Engineering/Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited program

Ability to complete MLOG Estimates and order Material from Mapps

Has basic understanding of Substation NESC codes and their usage.

Has basic understanding of our Cascade Maintenance System

Ability to complete some moderate level substation design projects

Ability to read and interpret substation schematics and wiring diagrams

Ability to use Substation Engineering Standards while working under immediate supervision

Ability to apply basic Substation Engineering principles to recommend some substation engineering solutions

Has knowledge of AutoCad

Level 2 Substation Engineer/Specialist

All of the qualifications of an Engineer I plus the following:

Increased ability to complete moderate-sized MLOG Estimates and order Material from Mapps

Has increased understanding of Substation NESC codes and their usage.

Has increased understanding of our Cascade Maintenance System.

Can complete more complex Substation Design Projects

Has increased ability to read and interpret electric schematic and wiring diagrams.

Has increased ability to use Substation Engineering Standards while working under immediate supervision.

Has increased ability to apply basic electrical engineering principles to recommend sound substation engineering solutions.

Has working knowledge of Autocad.

Level 3 Substation Engineer/Specialist

All of the qualifications of an Engineer II plus the following:

Proficient in completing complex-sized MLOG Estimates and order various Material of all types from Mapps

Has a proficient understanding of Substation NESC codes and their usage.

Has ability to suggest substation redesigns in light of NESC code issues and/or violations and think out improved solutions to complex substation projects

Proficient in using the Cascade Maintenance System.

Proficient in various Substation Engineering Projects with limited support.

Proficient in reading, interpreting, and correcting various substation schematics and wiring diagrams.

Has significant ability to use and improve upon existing Substation Engineering Standards

Has significant ability to apply complex electrical engineering principles to recommend sound substation engineering solutions to nearly all types of substation engineering projects.

Has ability to lead substation field and office meetings

Senior Substation Engineer

All of the qualifications of an Engineer III plus the following:

Skilled in completing complex-sized MLOG Estimates and order various Material of all types from Mapps

Skilled in developing substation engineering strategies for the largest and most complex substation engineering jobs

Has a comprehensive mastery of Substation NESC codes and their usage.

Skilled on the various NESC codes and their applications in electrical substations.

Skilled in the design, operation and maintenance of all voltage class substations.

Has the comprehensive ability to suggest substation redesigns in light of NESC code issues and/or violations and think out safe, efficient, cost-saving solutions to complex substation projects

Skilled in the comprehensive ability to read, interpret, and correct various electric schematics and wiring diagrams.

Skilled in leading teams, projects and meetings with various stakeholders to achieve desired outcomes.

Responsibilities:

Summary

- Implements and coordinates the installation and energization of high voltage equipment associated with the corporation and its customers

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

- Plan, estimate, design and manage complex electric Substation projects according to Company Standards, sound engineering practices and applicable codes. Prepare detailed drawings, permits, easements, bid specifications, material and labor estimates, and material reservations and all other documents required for project completion. Manage projects to completion and provide engineering direction.

- Provide technical support for the operations of all Company and customer Substations.

- Research, specify, order and coordinate material purchases and establish stocking levels of major transmission line electrical equipment.

- Verify Substation Department's methods and procedures are kept current with the latest and best industry safety requirements and engineering practices and codes.

- Receives input from Operations groups on performance of existing engineered facilities and systems.

- Evaluates, improves, and budgets future designs.

- Works internally with Transmission Planning, Transmission Substation Engineering, Transmission Operations, Distribution Engineering and Operations, Technical Services, Substation Operations, Plant Operations, Major Accounts and Construction regarding the installation and maintenance of new and existing substation facilities.

- Interfaces and works with various interconnected companies, utilities, and entities such as INDOT, REMC, FERC, NERC, RFC, IURC, and Midwest ISO where appropriate.

Preferred Additional Qualifications for Position

  • Proficient in principles of project management
  • Understanding of basic principles of project management
  • Experience in the electric utility industry
  • Proficient knowledge of operations support systems, Cascade, iTOA, EMS, Maximo, Work Management, GIS, CIS, NMS, CYME
