Department Summary

Power Supply Engineering Services provides quality engineering and technical solutions to maintain safe, reliable, and compliant operations of PGE generation assets while embarking on transformational work to decarbonize our energy supply resources. We support PGE's generation fleet and other PGE departments in the following areas:

  • Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, & Plant Control Systems Engineering
  • Engineering Design Support
  • Generation Capital and O&M Project Management
  • Dam Safety, Arc Flash, Gas Pipeline and Welding Program Management
  • Company-wide survey services

Position Summary

PGE is seeking a highly skilled metallurgist to complete failure analyses on piping and plant equipment. Work may also include analyses of transmission and distribution assets. The materials / metallurgical engineer is encouraged to lead PGE's cathodic protection and coating program for corrosion protection for the generation fleet and performs conformational testing and evaluation of materials and processes for code specifications. The selected candidate will support PGE as a materials and failure consultant.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering Production Maintains currency in state-of-the-art engineering practices and provides guidance and direction on engineering processes and standards to colleagues as requested. Utilizes solid understanding and interpretation of applicable codes (American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM)) and serves as a resource, providing guidance to other engineers. Familiarity with the National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE), Society for Protective Coatings (SSPC) and International Organization for Standarization (ISO) codes and standards or ability and desire to learn.

Engineering Production Performs complex metallurgical failure analysis on plant piping and equipment; develops material specifications for the design group; performs conformational testing and evaluation of materials and processes for code specifications; completes full range of complex metal-failure tests and analyses; supports the organization as a materials and failure consultant. May lead activities required to maintain compliance with the company's covered piping program. Analyzes, responds to, performs and reviews complex technical studies; supports Root Cause Analyses (RCAs); prepares reports and provides data and recommendations on complex technical matters to company personnel and management.

Project Coordination Actively coordinates with other internal/external team members on moderately complex projects, including representing the team to interdepartmental stakeholders. Coordinates majority of work with plant staff, mechanical design and nondestructive examination team. Reviews lower-level engineering work.

Knowledge Sharing Serves as a technical specialist and provides consultation/guidance to project teams in a particular practice area; actively fosters knowledge management and provides mentoring; implements resource-management strategy. Maintains a high level of engineering proficiency within a field of specialization.

Qualifications    

Required Senior, P3:

  • Education: Requires a bachelor's degree in engineering (Metallurgy, Mechanical, Material Science, Chemical, or other related field). ABET-accredited engineering program or program accredited by an equivalent agency preferred.
  • Experience: Five or more years in engineering, or four or more years in a related field with PE license.
  • Valid Drivers License required

Required Principal, P4:

  • Education: Requires a bachelor's degree in engineering (Metallurgy, Mechanical, Material Science, Chemical, or other related field). ABET-accredited engineering program or program accredited by an equivalent agency preferred.
  • Experience: Eight or more years in engineering
  • Valid Drivers License required

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional Engineering (PE) license preferred
  • NACE certification desired
  • Familiarity with Non-Destructive Examination (NDE) visual, dye penetrant, and ultrasonic inspection and potential willingness to become PGE-certified
  • Experience predominantly focused on ferrous metallurgy
  • Previous experience working with thermal or boiler assets
  • Previous experience working with renewable assets (wind and hydro)
  • Ability to perform mechanical testing techniques
  • Familiarity working in a lab environment
  • Experience in the preparation and analysis of metallurgical samples and analytical techniques
  • Ability to investigate and analyze quality issues related to metallurgy and heat treat processes
  • Familiarity with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section 5 and or Section 9
  • Familiarity with Piping Design and ASME Power Piping Code B31.1
