Position Purpose
Substation protection and control technician is responsible for assisting higher classifications in performing installation, maintenance, and testing of protective systems including instrument transformers, batteries, DC control circuitry, AC control circuitry, protective relays, communication systems (RTU), and all other duties related to substation protection.
Required Education & Experience
Associates in Electrical Engineering Technology or related technical field. Must be successfully recommended from EEI test.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering Technology or related technical fieldDetailed knowledge and applicable experience with substation protection equipment, including relays, RTU's, substation batteries, DC control circuitry, AC control circuitry, instrument transformers, station service transformers, switches, and breakers.Detailed knowledge of substation protection zones and relay functionality. Proficient in reading and utilizing DC control circuitry drawings, AC three-line drawings, panel wiring diagrams, equipment drawings and all other drawings associated with the protection of substation equipment.An ability to learn quickly, apply practical skills, and deal with rapid technological and business change. Ability to enter and maintain information in a database, write documentation, and manipulate data in a spreadsheet. Proficient in computer hardware: network and serial communications, set up and operate various types of test equipment associated with substation protection devices. Proficient in computer software: Microsoft Windows 10, Office 365, Cascade, Powerbase, RTS, SEL AcSELerator Quickset and RTAC.
Job Description
Assist others with performing and completing documentation required for testing equipment on the substation protection system. Protection system components include, but are not limited to, potential transformers, current transformers, DC control circuits, AC control circuits, substation batteries, circuit breaker components, protective relays, and communication systems (RTU). Assist with calibration and performance functional testing on microprocessor and electromechanical type relays in accordance with the manufacture specifications. Assist in the installation, maintenance, analyzation, and troubleshooting of remote terminal units (RTU's), network port switches, SCADA equipment, substation battery systems, transformer control circuits, voltage regulation relays and controls, breaker control circuits, and protective relays.Assist in completion of test plans and written commissioning, testing, and maintenance procedures for protective relaying.Assist with the investigation of substation operations and outages utilizing relay data oscillography and sequence of events reporting.Assist with the installation, maintenance, and testing of electrical control equipment, electrical circuitry, and components according to engineering specifications. Consult instruction manuals, schematics, and wiring diagrams in order to commission, troubleshoot, and resolve equipment issues and ensure optimum equipment functionality.Assist others with diagnosis, analyze, troubleshoot, and making recommendations related to malfunctions/failures and perform preventive/corrective maintenance on protection system equipment.Verify that all documentation and prints meet applicable specifications and standards and modify drawings to reflect any changes. Perform daily work tasks utilizing human performance procedures and tools designed to reduce errors and actively participate in recognizing and suggesting improvements as necessary.
