A PCC Region System Operator is responsible for monitoring and directing the safe and reliable operation of electric transmission, substation, and distribution systems. System Operators are trained, certified and responsible for writing and directing primary voltage planned and emergency switching as well as alarm response and outage restoration dispatching duties as assigned. System Operators are trained, certified and responsible for ensuring operations adhere to relevant Federal safe work practices (OSHA 1910.269), Union/Company accident prevention manuals and critical infrastructure protection (NERC) and standards of conduct (FERC) regulation.
- Performs fault location, isolation, and load restoration techniques and the communication therein to ensure safe and reliable power delivery.
- Ensures relay zones of protection are identified and determines how these will affect system operation in view of switching to be performed.
- Monitors and maintains system voltage at acceptable levels to prevent damage to electric equipment and monitors and controls equipment to mitigate line and equipment over-loading conditions.
- Consistently maintains and provides a safe working environment for field employees within the assigned area and scope of responsibility.
- Onsite shift work is required.
Requirements
System Operator Classification Requirements
- An active NERC certification (RC, TSO)
- Must have a High School Diploma, GED, or proof of equivalent and be a member of IBEW Local 125 in good standing or eligible to join membership
- Demonstrated understanding of electric theory and operation
- Competency and experience in the operation of SCADA EMS, Outage Management Systems, Network Management Systems and related electronic switch writing technologies. Familiarity with Microsoft Office Applications
- Acceptable verbal, written and word processing skills and be capable of authoring clear, accurate and concise switching procedures using common electric utility dispatching and operating terminology
- Demonstrated understanding of OSHA 1910.269 and derived high voltage company safety manuals
- Able to respond promptly to requests for assistance from emergency agencies such as fire, police, medical, etc
System Operator Trainee Classification Requirements
- An expired or no NERC certification (RC, TSO)
- Must have a High School Diploma, GED, or proof of equivalent and be a member of IBEW Local 125 in good standing or eligible to join membership
- Demonstrated understanding of electric theory and operation
- Acceptable verbal, written and word processing skills and be capable of authoring clear, accurate and concise instructions
- Competence with Microsoft Office Suite tools Familiarity with OSHA 1910.269
- Able to respond promptly to requests for assistance from emergency agencies such as fire, police, medical, etc
Preferences
- Bachelor's degree in electrical or mechanical engineering, electric journeymen qualification, or completion of trade schooling relevant to power system engineering, design, or operations.
- Previous experience as an electric system operator or power dispatcher
