Job Summary

The Management Position Responsible for Plant Chemistry/Environmental is responsible for maintaining an effective plant chemistry program that preserves and protects plant components and equipment, providing an accurate and thorough analytical laboratory, and complying with the governing radiological and non-radiological environmental regulations to minimize corrosion and ensure plant, personnel, and public safety. 

Primary Responsibilities

  • Overall responsibility to maintain an effective plant system chemistry, an effective radiological effluent and environmental program, an effective non-radiological program, an accurate and thorough analytical laboratory, and comply with the governing TS/TR, radiological and environmental regulations. The Chemistry Department owns the ODCM, PPC Plan, Chemistry Manual and SAAM Manual.
  • Establishes the goals and objectives for the Chemistry Department. Defines and provides a sound technical basis for chemistry requirements and communicates expectations to supervisory, staff and technician personnel.
  • Responsible for the selection and performance of personnel within the Chemistry Department.
  • Responsible for the Chemistry annual operating and maintenance budget.
  • Chairman for the Chemistry Technician Training Curriculum Committee.
  • Interface with other groups both within and outside the company to solve plant problems or to provide an exchange of ideas and expertise with respect to the plant's many different yet interrelated systems.
  • Represent the SSES Chemistry Group on Industry groups or committees such as the EPRI BWR Chemistry Guideline Committee. Chemistry member on USA Chemistry Core Peer team
  • Maintain qualifications for assigned Nuclear Emergency Response Organization.

FSAR Qualifications

  • Education:  Shall hold a high school diploma or equivalent.

  • Experience:  Shall have five years' experience in chemistry of which one year shall be in radiochemistry at an operating nuclear power plant.  Two years of this five years' experience shall be related technical training.  A maximum of four years of this five years' experience may be related technical or academic training.

Other Basic Qualifications (from SSES Career Map document)

  • Previously or currently holds one of three supervisory positions in Engineering, Operations or Chemistry/SupvSys/Radiation Protection.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previously or currently holds a position in Maintenance, Work Management, Training Management or INPO Loanee Assignment.

Other Basic Qualifications

  • SSES Requirement - B.S. degree in Chemistry, Physics, Chemical Engineering or other related engineering or physical science field.
  • A minimum of 15 years' experience in Chemistry/Radiochemistry at a nuclear power plant is required, along with the ability to satisfy the qualifications of ANSI/ANS 3.1-1978(4.4.3).
  • Experience working with radiological, environmental and laboratory laws, regulations, codes and/or standards in the operations of a Nuclear Power Plant.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, computer, and basic data management skills.
  • Good oral and written communication skills, including ability to conduct presentations to small or large technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Proficiency in technical writing.
  • Ability to effectively represent Talen Energy while interfacing with outside companies and regulatory agencies.
  • Strong leadership skills are needed to ensure smooth operation of the chemistry function that includes many and widely diverse programs.
  • Ability to motivate people and desire and ability to set and enforce high standards.
  • The vision of continuous improvement.
  • Ability to work within a fixed budget.
