The first step to becoming a Journeyman Lineman at PGE is to become a Pre_Apprentice!
The Pre-Apprentice program is a formal, structured training and on-the-job experience opportunity. Successful applicants who complete the program will be accepted into our line apprenticeship. During the program, you will learn to apply safe work practices while working on overhead and/or underground line construction maintenance crews while completing established competencies. You will work in all types of weather conditions and perform work at heights up to 90 feet, underground or in confined spaces
Before you apply-
Please make sure you have the following documents to attach to your application:
- Your high school diploma or GED
- A copy of your transcript showing that you have taken and passed Math 60 (algebra) within the past 36 months or a copy of your placement test results that show that you have taken a math placement test within the past 36 months placing you in at Math 65 or higher.
It is recognized that the Company is engaged in a public service requiring continuous operation, and it is agreed that recognition of such an obligation of continuous service is imposed upon both the Company and the Union.
DUTIES: (Essential Job Responsibilities)
- Work safely.
- Perform support duties of a line crew.
- Obtain competencies necessary to enter an apprenticeship.
- Make up guys, install services, and prepare transformers for installation.
- Learn to climb and work off pole.
- Pass periodic milestones satisfactorily.
- Assume additional responsibilities as the pre-apprenticeship progresses.
- Be willing and able to transfer to a department or region where training exists. Become familiar with hot-line safety tools and other tools of the trade.
- Respond to overtime needs.
AT TIME OF SELECTION TO THE PRE-APPRENTICESHIP, YOU MUST HAVE THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS COMPLETED.
- Valid driver's license and demonstrated safe driving record.
- Copy of High School Diploma or a GED.
- Completed and passed Math 60 (algebra) within the past 36 months.
- Pass the NJATC (National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee) test. Physically qualified for the position.
- Must be able to pass a physical and ability to lift over 50 lbs.
- Must possess and maintain a valid CDL driver's license within 3 months.
SELECTION:
- Pre-Apprentices will be required to complete the pole yard training program where they will demonstrate a degree of competency in ascending and descending poles.
- To provide for adequate, system-wide training, once selected for an Apprenticeship, Apprentices will be required to transfer from region to region every 3 months.
The position for which you are applying is covered under the Department of Transportation and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulations as defined in 49 CFR Part 40 and 49 CFR Parts 380, 390 and 391 which became effective on October 29, 2004. If you have been employed by PGE for less than 3 years, once you submit your Bid, you will receive a Supplemental Application form. The information you provide on the form related to the names and addresses of your previous employers during the preceding 3 years, dates of employment, reasons for leaving employment, whether you were subject to FMCSA while employed, whether your job was designated as a safety sensitive function in any DOT mode, may be used and your previous employers may be contacted.
