JOB OVERVIEW
Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is seeking a dedicated, results driven and dynamic leader to join our team in the role of Senior Manager, Government Relations for our downtown Toronto location.
Reporting to the Director, Provincial Stakeholder Relations, the Senior Manager plays a strategic role and is responsible for effectively managing and providing leadership for the stakeholder and government relations function at OPG, which includes the development and delivery of strategies to build and manage relationships with broader stakeholders, including; senior officials, federal, provincial, municipal and international governments, industry, local communities, and other key shareholders and influencers who have strategic policy or a regulatory role in OPG's corporate priorities.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Developing, recommending and implementing strategies and tactics for OPG in influencing government and stakeholders;
- Influence OPG's interface with the shareholders (Ministry of Energy and Ministry of Finance) as well as key Ontario Government Ministries who have strategic policy or a regulatory role in OPG's corporate priorities (e.g. Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Natural Resources, Ministry of Labour, etc.), in a manner which:
- Involves senior OPG executives and government representatives, including political staff and officials;
- Ensures that the spirit of the Shareholder Memorandum of Agreement' is upheld;
- Manage shareholder issues in a manner that furthers OPG's corporate priorities, and;
- Providing advice to senior OPG executives on the interface with government on OPG's corporate priorities and/or strategic issues.
- Direct OPG on opportunities to influence government and the shareholders on policy objectives through:
- Proposing appropriate government relations strategies with respect to OPG corporate priorities and strategic issues;
- Help to ensure that OPG senior executives are well briefed and prepared for meetings with the government. Work with senior OPG executives to ensure that OPG's objectives are met, and;
- Monitoring Government statements, positions, processes, policies and activities that could impact OPG's corporate priorities and strategic interest and that require a response.
- Represent OPG in meetings and forums, supporting OPG executives in their involvements;
- Advocate and influence on behalf of OPG with stakeholders and the government;
- Manage and promote influencing relationships with head office Queen's Park based political staff and government officials;
- Monitor OPG's business and policy developments, identify corporate priorities and strategic issues requiring government relations/stakeholder relations support;
- Recommend influencing positioning of issues and communications strategies and tactics in cooperation with OPG's Public Affairs;
- Developing new and maintain existing relationships with key stakeholders, directing and influencing them in support of OPG's objectives, including but not limited to:
- Ontario Chamber of Commerce;
- Toronto Board of Trade;
- Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters;
- Key opinion leaders; and
- Key environmental NGOs.
- Manage staff as required, provide leadership to colleagues to collaborate competently, while meeting business commitments and objectives.
EDUCATION
- University Degree in Political Science, Public Administration, Public Relations, Government Relations, Business, or equivalent is required.
QUALIFICATIONS
We are seeking a seasoned government and stakeholder relations professional with the following:
- 5 to 10 years of progressive and relevant experience working in a government relations, stakeholder relations, advocacy or public affairs or public policy development function;
- Minimum 3 years of experience working in a legislature/parliament or working directly with parliamentarians/elected officials in an advocacy or advisor role;
- Must have experience working with various levels of government. Must have a strong understanding of legislative processes, government procedures, issues management and their possible risk implications to OPG;
- In-depth knowledge of government decision-making at both a political and civil service levels;
- Experience building integrated and strategic stakeholder relations plans for a complex organization similar in size and scope of OPG;
- Effective written and oral communications skills, ability to clearly communicate with wide audience;
- Ability to prepare and present effective documentation and presentations with demonstrated experience influencing and motivating others;
- Experience establishing confidence, requires strong interpersonal skills and ability to cultivate, develop, and manage good working internal and external relationships necessary to effectively act as an OPG representative;
- Innovative thinking, requires strong problem solving skills to address and overcome current and future challenges;
- Ability to deliver results in a fast-paced environment. Exceptional organizational skills to execute time sensitive deliverables, adapt to changing priorities and effectively manage several projects simultaneously;
- A quick learner, ability to quickly understand information received from a number of different sources, analyze complex situations and risk implications to reach appropriate conclusions, providing recommendations for solutions and a path forward;
- Demonstrated critical thinking skills, broad conceptual, diagnostic and analytical skills. Ability to reach well grounded, independent conclusions and influence outcomes;
- Takes initiative and someone that has a strong level of passion and desire to succeed;
- Experience in energy, utilities, electricity or power industry or with a highly government regulated business is preferred; and
- Bilingual, fluency in French language is an asset.
