Introduction

The job candidate is responsible for participating in a goal-driven, team-oriented, high performance department, and for promoting its culture throughout the broader organization. The Market Settlements Lead Analyst will provide both technical and leadership support to perform value-added financial settlement activities related to the Midcontinent Independent System Operator energy (MISO) market. The incumbent will assume responsibility for financial activities including but not limited to market settlements of Day-Ahead, Real- Time, Financial Transmission Rights and Ancillary Services markets; transmission settlements from MISOs to NIPSCO in its role as transmission owner and transmission customer; provide leadership in enhancement and maintenance of the business output related to PCIs suite of products that support Market Settlements business process and deliverables; preparing schedules to support the monthly closing process; state and federal regulatory filings; preparing analytical studies on historical, forecast and pro-forma financial settlements data; developing and preparing financial data reports; preparing documentation for Dispute Resolution; performing the back-office function for external purchased power; demand response and off- system electric sales and detailed reporting to accurately reflect and manage financial settlement matters. This position will also support internal business partners including the following departments: Energy Supply Optimization; Accounting; Regulatory Affairs; Rates; Legal; Financial Planning; and Strategic Planning.

Essential Responsibilities:

Market Settlements Analyst

  • Identifies and understands issues, problems, and opportunities; compares data from different sources to draw conclusions, uses effective approaches for choosing course of action or developing appropriate solutions; take action that is consistent with available facts, constraints, and probable consequences.
  • Compiles, organizes and format data, including qualitative analysis required for internal and external reporting. Identifies and researches reporting issues, provides recommendation, assists with adoption of new reporting requirements
  • Recognizes situations where the regulatory framework and rate case outcomes drive our business; Supports regulatory initiatives by gathering data and preparing regulatory schedules and/or preparing pro-forma calculations, testimony and data requests; Assists with review and analysis of regulatory documents; Appreciates the application of the regulatory construct to our business.
  • Understands terminology and developments related to the MISO and the market settlement process. Knows how reconcile the third-party shadow settlement system and financial statements; Able to design test scripts and to perform testing of internal controls for Sarbanes-Oxley purposes; Knows when to and can apply technical knowledge to processes, procedures, and tasks.
  • Demonstrates a working knowledge of financial statements, metrics and measures, and key strategic business initiatives; Understands and utilizes economic and industry data as it relates to job responsibilities Demonstrates a working knowledge of the MISO transmission and energy markets. Has a general knowledge of other departments within the electric part of Energy Supply and Optimization (ESO) organization. Collaboratively develops solutions between and within ESO and Accounting and Rates; Verify and prepare documentation related to the cash settlement process for MISO.

  • Takes action to identify, analyze and improve existing processes within our organization to maximize opportunities for efficiency and effectiveness and meet new goals and objectives.

Senior Market Settlement Analyst includes Market Settlement Analyst duties plus the following:

  • Knowledge proficiency of Finance and Accounting principles, including the relationships between segments of the financial statements (e.g. balance sheet, income statement, and cash flow)
  • Knowledge proficiency of MISO charge type, including the relationship between segments of the settlement statements (e.g. MISO markets, NIPSCO resources, NIPSCO load)
  • Operation of third-party shadow settlement system to understand, report and verify charges and credits submitted by MISO
  • Operation of third-party contract settlement system to understand, report and verify charges and credits submitted by counterparties of the renewable generation projects
  • Operation of third-party transmission settlement system to understand, report and verify charges and credits submitted by MISO related to the transmission system
  • Analyze information from a variety of sources to detect trends, associations, cause-effect relationships and other anomalies and make recommendations.
  • Effectively manages time to ensure deadlines are met and quality is achieved.

Lead Market Settlement Analyst includes Senior Market Settlement Analyst duties plus the following:

  • Knowledge proficiency of how the energy company generates revenue, how the MISO market works and the ability to understand and explain how settlements flow through the financial statements and impact customers bills.
  • Develop and leverage relationships within and across work groups to achieve results
  • Proficient knowledge of the various charge types and calculations
  • Provide functional guidance to the Market Settlement Analysts
  • Recommend the most effective course of action after evaluating options against decision criteria.
  • Gain others commitment to take action that will enhance value for business partners and/or customers.
  • Build detailed analytical models, analyze data and make fact based recommendations that support business decisions.
  • Lead processes and/or improvement projects

Qualifications:

Required for Selection:

Senior Market Settlement Analyst

  • Preferred BS/BA in accounting, finance, economics or other business discipline or equivalent work related experience
  • Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision in an accurate and timely manner and deliver results
  • Proven record of experience in the regulatory environment, public accounting, finance and/or accounting discipline.
  • Demonstrated ability to be self-motivated
  • Exhibited expert technical skills and attention to details
  • Excellent verbal and communications skills
  • Solid working knowledge of Microsoft Office including Word, PowerPoint and Excel. Demonstrated proficiency in creating and reviewing Microsoft Excel spreadsheets that may contain complex formulas and data
  • Works in a team environment

Lead Analyst

  • Requires BS/BA in accounting, finance, economics or other business discipline or equivalent work related experience
  • Demonstrated proficiency in multiple functions/successful assumption of increasingly technical projects and responsibilities.
  • Proven ability to provide expert technical advice to others in an accurage and timely manner
  • Familiarity with the energy markets
  • Able to successfully lead and coordinate projects and supervise project team members.
