NOTE: This is a 16 month term starting May 2020
An opportunity currently exists for an internship student on the Operational Engineering team within the Asset Management department at AltaLink's Calgary office. Reporting, to the Manager, Operational Engineering, the successful candidate will be part of a multi-disciplinary engineering team responsible for supporting near-term issues on AltaLink's transmission facilities in Alberta, which range in voltage class from 69kV to 500kV. The successful candidate will be providing support to the protection and control (P&C) and supervisory, control and data acquisition (SCADA) disciplines.
Responsibilities
- Support AltaLink's safety culture and Near Miss/Hazard reporting program.
- Review SCADA as-built drawings.
- Review SCADA configuration changes.
- SCADA return data acceptance.
- Respond to internal and external requests related to AltaLink's existing facilities e.g. protection settings and fault clearing times.
- Review the performance of AltaLink's existing P&C equipment and settings and recommend improvements as necessary.
- Review the P&C relay load encroachment in support of AltaLink semi-static line ratings (SSLR) process.
- Review the transformer/feeder P&C coordination with Fortis's facilities.
- Support the Alberta Reliability Standards by performing protection coordination reviews/notifications, and responding to AESO data requests.
- Support senior engineers in performing root cause failure analysis (RCFA) investigation, analysis and reporting on transmission line and substation equipment failures.
- Perform thermal rating calculations, develop and update transmission line continuous and temporary ratings.
Qualifications
- An Electrical Engineering student (ideally specializing in power systems) who has completed two or more years of study and is enrolled in a Internship program at a recognized University.
- Knowledge of electrical transmission facilities (substations, lines, P&C and SCADA) would be an asset
- Demonstrated problem solving and analytical skills.
- Experience with Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- Dedicated team player with strong interpersonal and communications skills.
- Excellent time management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage a wide variety of issues simultaneously and meet strict deadlines.
