An opportunity currently exists for a Disturbance Analysis Engineer in the System Operations Engineering team within System Operations. The successful candidate will be accountable for the collection of power system data, analyzing Transmission system disturbances and managing the mitigation of deficiencies and/or improvements in the operation of the Transmission equipment. Additionally, the candidate will ensure all relevant outage data is retained so appropriate performance summaries can be produced as well as controls for applicable Alberta Reliability Standards (ARS) are followed. The successful candidate will also interface with our delivery partners and existing connected customers on a daily basis.
Responsibilities
- Acquire relevant power system information from all available sources (including the Control Centre Log Book, PI Historian, Digital Fault Recorders, intelligent electronic devices (IEDs), substation drawings) and analyze all transmission system events for correct or incorrect equipment operation.
- Based on the analysis of equipment operation initiate corrective action to mitigate problems/issues and follow-up that appropriate actions are completed.
- Ensure that accurate and relevant power system event data is entered and saved in the Transmission Outage Statistics System (TOSS) database.
- Locate power system faults using intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) for expedient dispatch of field resources.
- Manage the operation, and associated networks/communication links, of numerous 'smart' devices (digital/numeric relays, Digital Fault Recorders, etc.) to provide valuable information for forensic analyses of transmission system disturbances. Propose changes to these devices, networks and related processes for increased analysis capability.
- Provide technical support in the answering of performance related information requests for internal and external stakeholders.
- Liaise with office and field Protection and Control (P&C) specialists to resolve P&C equipment deficiencies.
- Provide technical support in the implementation of new power system monitoring equipment.
- Support the development, interpretation, implementation and modification of operational standards and practices that affect the quality of the electrical service to customers.
- Support members of the Disturbance Analysis team.
- Ensure compliance to the Alberta Reliability Standards by following required timelines for analysis, ensuring corrective actions are completed, and providing disturbance reports and other disturbance information to the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO).
Qualifications
- Must have a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering with a minimum of 7 years related experience in the area(s) of: Fault and Disturbance Analysis, Protection & Control, power system operation and/or power system equipment.
- Qualifies for registered as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA).
- Proven ability/experience in the above noted responsibilities.
- Formal training in the area(s) of Fault and Disturbance Analysis and/or Protection & Control (P&C).
- Knowledge of engineering applications including CAPE, VISIO, AcSELerator 5030, DIGSI and Enervista UR Setup.
- Knowledge in power system operation and control, power system dynamics, and transients.
- Knowledge in major equipment in power systems including transformers, transmission lines, VAR resources and generators.
- Familiar with local area networks, communication schemes, platforms and protocols used to provide local and remote interrogation with substation relays, meters, fault recorders and other intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) would be an asset.
- Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills with ability to work in a team environment, positively influence others, and develop strong internal and external relationships.
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to simultaneously manage a wide variety of issues.
- Strong analytical, risk assessment and problem solving skills.
