About the Position:

The Underground Engineering position provides engineering expertise and technical support for capital projects and operations for the National Grid underground electric transmission system.  The Underground Engineer is responsible for preparing engineering deliverables for projects containing technical scope, project schedules, and project estimates as well as evaluation of technical alternatives.  Other responsibilities include support of emergency events, procurement events, capacity needs/system stability for other departments, and inspection & maintenance plan development and implementation.

Position Responsibilities (including but not limited to):

Act as the technical team lead for underground transmission projects during the conceptual phase, preliminary engineering phase, detail design phase, construction phase, and closeout phase of the project lifecycle:

  • Prepare and evaluate transmission underground alternatives for major transmission line and substation projects
  • Participate in routing identification and evaluation for new underground transmission lines
  • Conduct site inspections to develop project scope and identify risks
  • Prepare engineering deliverables containing technical scope and drawings
  • Prepare overall project schedules to support budget forecasting and outage planning
  • Develop estimates for each step of the project at varying levels of accuracy
  • Prepare testimony to support the legal proceedings for major transmission line and substation projects.
  • Procure material including the preparation of technical requirements, initiation of the procurement event, bid review, contract management, and delivery performance of material vendors
  • Travel domestically and internationally to cable manufacturers for quality assurance visits
  • Monitor and deliver on technical project milestones
  • Provide technical support during construction procurement events
  • Provide technical support during the construction phase of the project cycle
  • Perform closeout activities to accurately close projects both financially and technically by providing work order summaries and archiving as-built information
  • Ensure new asset data/information is captured correctly in the appropriate asset registers
  • Travel within the National Grid service area (Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and upstate New York) will be required approximately 25% of the time to support capital projects
