Real-time simulation for testing series-compensated line protection: New RTDS® Simulator sample case

January 18, 2021

The RTDS® Simulator's new "Series Compensated Line Protection" sample case, available in the RSCAD® real-time simulation software, demonstrates the challenges that can arise for protective relays in series-compensated systems. This new sample case provides a convenient starting point for power system professionals to study and correct protective relays that are misoperating in areas where they have series compensation.

In addition, the sample case discusses relaying algorithms and practices employed to overcome the adverse effects of introducing series compensation. It also presents the benefits of using an electromagnetic-transient type (EMT) real-time simulator for analyzing series compensated systems.

EMT modelling is a key tool for studying and addressing issues related to series compensation. Often, EMT modelling is not only recommended, but required, as a series compensated system needs to be represented accurately over a range of frequencies.

Running EMT simulation in real-time allows for the closed-loop testing of protective relays. Engineers can model the series-compensated transmission line and other surrounding components of their network in detail. They can also physically connect protective relays from single devices to entire protective schemes to the simulation in order to study their performance or the effectiveness of the countermeasures.

System parameters in the sample case can be adjusted, such as line lengths, source impedances, and percentage compensation to produce phenomena associated with series compensation, such as voltage inversion, current inversion, and transient effects due to subharmonics.

In addition to Series Compensated Line Protection, RSCAD has a variety of sample cases that can be helpful to users. Popular applications of the RTDS Simulator and RSCAD software span from protective relay testing to HVDC and FACTS control testing, smart grid and distributed generation, power system cybersecurity, and more.
