NEW YORK
NYSEG and RG&E Reach One Million Smart Meter Upgrades

January 8, 2025

Customers recognize the benefits of fewer estimated bills, quicker outage response, and efficient remote connections and disconnections

New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) and Rochester Gas and Electric (RG&E) today (Jan 6) announced a significant milestone in providing smart and more efficient energy infrastructure for our customers by eclipsing one million electric and gas smart meter upgrades across New York State.

The statewide upgrade began in Fall 2022 and will reach all 17 NYSEG and RG&E divisions, including a total of almost 1.3 million electric and 600,000 gas meter upgrades, before project completion.

"I am incredibly proud of and grateful to our dedicated, hardworking NYSEG and RG&E employees, along with our partner vendors, achieving this significant milestone. One million smart meters is quite an accomplishment," said Patricia Nilsen, president and CEO of NYSEG and RG&E. "Our field crews and in-house teams have worked around the clock to bring these benefits to our customers. We have said from the start that smart meters are a game changer, and we're now seeing their impact improve our service."

Smart meters are electric or natural gas meter modules with two-way wireless communications between the meter and the Company's systems. They securely transmit usage and meter data automatically, generating bills based on actual use versus manual meter reading or estimates.  This technology allows customers better understanding of, and control over, their energy bills.

Both customers and our operating companies are noticing immediate benefits, including:

  • Bills generated based on actual, monthly readings.
  • Quicker response during outages.
  • More efficient connection and disconnection for customers moving in and out through remote capabilities. Combined, NYSEG and RG&E have initiated 30,000 remote transactions leading to 57,000 fewer crew dispatches.
  • Greater information on energy consumption via Energy Manager, which allows customers to track monthly, daily, and hourly usage.
