FortisAlberta Begins LED Streetlight Conversion in Lacombe

September 22, 2017

Residents are advised that crews from FortisAlberta are installing new Light Emitting Diode (LED) streetlights throughout the community this fall as part of their LED Streetlight Conversion program.

Around 1,331 Fortis-owned city streetlights are being converted from high-pressure sodium to LED lights under this program, which is expected to be completed by October 13, 2017.

The new LED technology offers a viable and cost-effective option for the existing streetlights. Annual savings of $5.71 per streetlight are anticipated after the conversion.

In December 2016, Council formally requested FortisAlberta proceed with the LED conversion on eligible city of Lacombe street lights. In May 2017, FortisAlberta received approval from the Alberta Utilities Commission to continue with the streetlight conversions in over 130 communities.

LED technology offers many benefits, including reduced energy consumption, which results in energy savings and reduced maintenance costs.

The new LED streetlights will provide more even and efficient distribution of light and better quality of light, resulting in increased safety and security.

The fixtures do not produce ultraviolet rays or infrared radiation, and have life spans of more than 20 years. They emit a whiter, warmer-coloured light that has minimal blue light exposure. The streetlights are also dark sky friendly, with zero up-light to minimize light pollution.
