On July 20, 2017, Cube Hydro Partners renamed the High Rock Powerhouse in North Carolina "Kristina M. Johnson High Rock Powerhouse" in honor of Kristina Johnson, the company's Chief Executive Officer. Under Dr. Johnson's strategic vision and leadership, Cube Hydro owns and operates 19 hydropower plants in the United States, and has invested hundreds of millions of dollars to optimize and upgrade the domestic generation of clean, renewable energy.
In February 2017, Dr. Johnson led the successful acquisition of High Rock, and three other hydropower plants along the Yadkin River, and she now leads the current multimillion-dollar project to modernize these facilities. As part of this effort, Cube Hydro announced in June an agreement with GE Renewable Energy to install three innovative aerating turbines at High Rock. These turbines are expected to increase oxygen levels in the water and produce environmental benefits for fish and other aquatic wildlife. In addition, Cube Hydro plans to install at High Rock a new proprietary Dedekind cone valve designed by Cube that will further improve water quality and river performance.
"Cube Hydro's vision for High Rock demonstrates the innovative culture that Kristina has fostered at the company and that has led to the company's rapid growth over the last three years," said Ginger Lew, member of the Cube Hydro Partners Board of Directors. "With this dedication, the Kristina Johnson Powerhouse at High Rock Dam will stand for many years as a reminder of Kristina's substantial and lasting accomplishments at Cube Hydro."
"I am grateful to receive this recognition, especially on the 102 nd birthday of my father, who showed me the potential of hydropower through his long career as a hydropower engineer at Westinghouse," said Kristina Johnson. "I know if he were alive, my father would be proud of the work that Cube Hydro is doing to develop renewable energy projects and bring the economic and social benefits of clean energy to local communities."
In September, Kristina Johnson will transition to her new role as the 13 th Chancellor of the State University of New York (SUNY).
