Thousands Join Free Service to Support Customers in a power cut

May 23, 2017

Northern Powergrid, the company responsible for the network that keeps the power flowing to 3.9 million homes and businesses across the North East, Yorkshire and northern Lincolnshire, is set to help thousands of customers who may need extra support if their lights go out.

Since April 2016 the electricity distributor has helped some 235,000 people join it's free Priority Services Register.

Powergrid Care offers customers who may have a serious health condition, be medically dependent on electricity, elderly, have very young children or have mental health or specific communication needs, access to free priority services to support them if they have a power cut.

Customers who register may be able to benefit from a range of services, depending on the nature of the power cut and their personal circumstances, they include:

  • between one and three hours -  personal telephone updates from the electricity distributor's specially trained Powergrid Care team plus a taxi to friends or family
  • between four and six hours - option of a hot meal, a torch/glow stick and continued telephone updates
  • between six and 12 hours - a call from the British Red Cross, visit from engineer and generator if needed
  • 12 hours plus - option of alternative accommodation if required.

The electricity distributor's dedicated Powergrid Care web page offers customers tailored information about the different support available and a simple way to sign-up themselves, a member of their family or a friend to the free service.

Siobhan Barton, head of stakeholder relations, said: "We have focused on improving and promoting the support we can provide our customers who may find a power cut more than just an inconvenience due to their personal circumstances.

"We've used research and targeted communications to help us engage with customers in the communities we serve and encourage more local people to join our free service. Welcoming some 235,000 people to our Powergrid Care Priority Services Register is excellent news as we continue our work to be there for our customers who may be more vulnerable if their lights go out.

"Through our Powergrid Care priority services and trained team of advisors we're able to offer extra support that helps meet customer's personal needs - especially if they are part of a more complicated power cut that may take longer to repair."

Customers can sign up friends or family - as well as themselves - at any time by visiting northernpowergrid.com/care or calling 0800 169 2996.
