Position Summary
A successful candidate will have an understanding of electrical theory or power system operations, experience or knowledge of switching and tagging procedures and experience operating power system equipment. The candidate must be capable of acquiring an in-depth working knowledge of power system and operational fundamentals through self study and classroom training. The candidate must obtain North America Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) certifications and successfully complete designated classroom training provided through Oncor Training Program.
Key Roles & Responsibilities
Transmission Grid Controller Associate
Other duties may be assigned. Directly or through others, the incumbent:
- Within one year from employment obtain ONE of the following NERC Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) Certifications:
- Reliability Coordinator
- Transmission Operator or,
- Balancing, Interchange and Transmission.
- Successfully complete a designated portion of the Oncor training program.
- Meet expectation for gaining a working knowledge of power system operations.
- Successfully complete NERC CIP training and background check.
- Gain a thorough understanding of Section 6 of the Oncor Transmission Safety Handbook.
- Perform real time control room switching under the supervision of a Transmission Grid Controller or Senior Transmission Grid Controller.
Transmission Grid Controller
Other duties may be assigned. Directly or through others, the incumbent:
- Will have thorough understanding of Oncor operating procedures.
- Will successfully demonstrate through simulation operational skills and knowledge learned throughout the training based on Oncor operating procedures.
- Perform real time control room switching under the supervision of a Senior Transmission Grid (TG) Controller during training period.
- Effectively communicate information to other transmission entities, Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) and distribution under the supervision on a Senior Transmission Grid (TG) Controller during training period.
- At the completion of the Oncor Training Program, must show proficiency in all areas of system operations.
- Able to progress to Senior TG Controller by successfully passing the ERCOT exam, meeting in-role experience requirements, and performing all job tasks and duties in a safe and reliable manner.
- Successfully complete NERC Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) training and background check.
- Capable of understanding and adhering to Section 6 of the Oncor Transmission Safety Handbook.
Transmission Grid Controller Senior
Other duties may be assigned. Directly or through others, the incumbent:
- Monitor and control (through Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA)) transmission and substation facilities to ensure transmission line and transformer loading within ratings, a reliable system voltage profile, and operation within first contingency limits. This includes maintaining/restoring acceptable dynamic reactive capacity, line loading, bus voltages, transformer load tap changes, switching capacitors/reactors and operation of transmission breakers/switches. This also includes monitoring and responding to station equipment and voltage alarms.
- In a safe manner, restore service (through SCADA and dispatch of field personnel) to transmission and substation facilities to reduce customer outage time and restore system integrity (voltage stability and transfer capacity).
- Write/check/issue switching orders for transmission and substation facilities consistent with Section 6 of the Transmission Safety Handbook to ensure safety of field personnel while making transmission and substation facilities available for maintenance and construction activities.
- Faciliates the enernizaton of new transmission lines, stations and equipment.
- Coordinate all switching activities with other TGM Region Desks, Distribution Operating Centers, transmission work centers and other utilities to make certain that safety and reliability are upheld.

- Ability to communicate power system events verbally and in writing and ability to multi-task.
Education and Experience
- High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent is required.
- Associate degree in electric power technology or equivalent work experience is required.
- Basic knowledge of power system facilities.
- Applicants that have completed a Navy Nuclear type program encouraged to apply.
