Position Summary
The PG&E Geosciences Department is seeking candidates for a Senior Geotechnical Engineer position to assist with programmatic and project-specific work across the P&GE service territory. Practical experience in supporting geotechnical engineering assessments and construction is highly desirable. The successful candidate should be able to obtain a professional engineer (PE) and geotechnical engineer (GE) license in California when they have obtained the requisite experience.
The focus of this position is to support PG&E's gas transmission Geohazard Program, PG&E's Electric Transmission and Substation Program, PG&E's Hydropower Program, and related work including desktop geohazards detection and evaluation, field reconnaissance and characterization, monitoring, and site-specific mitigation if necessary.
Anticipated tasks may include, but are not limited to:
- Providing oversight, coordination, and field support for geohazard inspections system wide.
- Assisting with field and desktop geohazard assessment and report preparation.
- Performing detailed geotechnical calculations including development of ground models and material properties, shallow and deep foundations, slope stability analyses, seepage analyses, settlement, liquefaction and seismic deformation.
- Leveraging available public and private programmatic resources to perform preliminary desktop site assessments for geologic, geotechnical, and construction conditions.
- Using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) applications and related geospatial tools to plan and prioritize field work and to complete basic desktop analyses.
- Reviewing technical reports prepared by Geosciences colleagues and consultants.
- Supporting company Emergency Operations Center (EOC) response as Geosciences representative and SME.
The selected candidate will have the opportunity to support activities as described above while working with a team of highly qualified and experienced Geosciences SMEs. The candidate will have opportunities for exposure to geologic and geotechnical practice for a variety of utility infrastructure. The vast PG&E service territory and diversity of infrastructure provides the opportunity for challenging interdisciplinary work in many geomorphic terranes throughout California. You will be teamed with experienced professionals from a variety of fields and will work with top consultants in engineering geology and geotechnical engineering. One to two days of fieldwork each week is typical and about six (6) full-week field mobilizations per year are expected.
