Provides visionary, strategic and technical leadership while directing Xcel Energy's Substation Commissioning Engineering activities for control and protection systems for high voltage substations. Accountable for providing resident technical matter expertise and real-time technical support to construction, maintenance and operations teams for high voltage substations. Manages the development of best-practice commissioning procedures and practices. Accountable for assigned portions of Xcel Energy NERC/FERC compliance responsibilities, goals and objectives related to system protection and CIP. Accountable for attainment of corporate and business unit goals and objectives. Committed to employee development.
Essential Responsibilities
- Manages engineering support of control and protection systems commissioning activities as assigned. Accountabilities for substation control and protection systems commissioning engineering assignments include the implementation and management of commissioning procedures and practices to meet system reliability and dependability requirements and managing the development of commissioning standards.
- Accountable for the adherence and execution of operating company regulatory compliance related to system protection and CIP including all applicable NERC and regional reliability coordinator.
- Establishes and champions the Department's business plan, goals and objectives in line with corporate and business unit strategic goals and initiatives.
- Responsible for effective, efficient and competitive utilization of resources, with emphasis on safety, timeliness, cost-containment, system reliability, customer satisfaction, optimal asset utilization and compliance with regulations.
- Develops leadership, selects and retains a multi-functional, diverse and well-trained workforce which is motivated and empowered. Models innovative approaches. Promotes employee involvement in continuous learning, career planning and enhancing job/industry knowledge and skills. Promotes engineers being professionally registered.
- Communicates with and establishes effective working relationships with external entities and internal organizations to maximize project efficiency, responsiveness and resource allocation.
- Represents the company nationally and locally through participation in industry and professional forums in order to stay abreast of emerging industry changes, issues and technologies.
Minimum Requirements
BS in engineering (electrical preferred).
Minimum of 10 years' relevant engineering experience.
Five or more years of prior management experience preferred.
Specific experience in the area of substation maintenance and/or commissioning engineering preferred.
Professional Engineering registration required.
Demonstrates technical expertise while serving as a technical resource to others.
Familiar with Xcel Energy safety programs and requirements, OSHA, EPA, NESC, NERC and FERC regulations and compliance requirements.
