- Major Function - Operates, monitors and controls plant electric generating units and associated systems to ensure safe, efficient and continuous production of electricity. Under the direction and review of the Plant Mgr., Plant Supervisor and in conjunction with the System Dispatcher.
- Typical Duties - Operate turbines, generators and all associated systems and auxiliary equipment from the control center board, either manually or by automatic control, for safe, controlled production of electrical energy.
- Monitor plant and auxiliary equipment operation at the control board, charts, meters and gauges to ensure proper plant operation. Maintain proper voltage and current. Synchronize the generator. Control steam flow during operations.
- Troubleshoot operating problems from control board. Initiate corrective action when necessary and take equipment in and out of service for repairs in a safe and orderly fashion.
- Coordinate with dispatcher to govern generator load and system voltage. Report load and restriction conditions to dispatchers and receive switching orders and initiate switching
- Coordinate steam usage for power generation with the steam suppliers and notify suppliers of any impending variation of steam usage or unit status change, such as turbine start-up or shutdown, etc.
- Maintain a shift log to ensure accurate records and prepare daily reports concerning plant heat rate, steam usage, megawatt output, etc.
- Take readings on plant equipment and systems for reporting operating status to plant supervisor, plant mgr., or Steam Generation Department staff personnel for determining plant efficiency
- Direct and delegate order to plant operators to maintain proper control of all generating systems and associated auxiliary systems and equipment.
- Answer plant phones, and direct calls to the requested individual, or department as necessary. Perform necessary housekeeping duties as assigned.
- Train other control room operators - geothermal, when called upon to do so.
NOTE: May be filled at the CRO Trainee, CRO, or CRO Certified level.
Requirements
High School Diploma or GED
Journeyman level or equivalent technical skills/qualifications (military, trade school, etc.) in one or more crafts (Mechanic, Electrician, Instrumentation & Control Technician or Control Room Operator.)
At Least 3 years experience in the operation and or maintenance of large generating plant or similar industrial facility or process.
Successfully pass a pre-employment exam which will determine applicant's knowledge and skill level of operating plant processes, electrical distribution, generation, water/steam cycles and turbine operation as one factor in the selection process.
Effective communications skills
Basic proficiency with computers and related software
Demonstrated team working skills
Must be able to work a rotating shift including weekends and holidays
Must be available as necessary to cover for overtime, including weekends and holidays
Must complete a respiratory evaluation and fit test
Must be physically able to perform the essential duties of the job.
