The successful candidates will become integral members of the Long-Term Operations Planning team and/or the Strategic Operations Planning team. Both teams operate within the System Operations Center (SOC). The two teams work closely together and are dedicated to outage planning, reliability analysis, and recommendation of possible construction projects over a timeframe ranging from one month up to five years into the future.
The transmission system is currently experiencing significant changes driven by growing demand, the integration of renewable energy sources, increased electrification, and the expansion of data centers. In response, both teams' primary objective is to closely analyze and study the transmission system throughout the 5 year period, incorporating different data sources into PSSE/TARA-based and EMS-based load flow and N-1 contingency analysis studies. These data sources include load forecasts, typical generation forecasts/patterns, existing transmission and generation outages, and consideration of any key project-related outages. A successful operations planning study keeps the grid safe and reliable while delivering on key projects. Additionally, one key aspect to successful outage planning studies is having an accurate model. The successful candidate will also work on initiatives supporting the development of more accurate models up to five years in the future. These models are designed to incorporate forecasts of load growth, anticipate planned changes to system topology, and align with necessary construction timelines. This role will work closely with other teams, including System Operations, SOC Outage Coordination, ET Planning, Project Management, and EMS Modeling. Prior experience in transmission planning is preferred.
There are a few differences between the roles of the Long Term Planning and Strategic Planning teams, but a couple key distinctions are:
- Long Term Ops: Includes 1 month to 1 year studies, emphasizing a strong working relationship with the outage coordination, project management, and operations departments
- Strategic Ops: Includes 1 to 5 year studies, resulting in more work on improving our modeling and necessitating a strong working relationship with ET Planning and EMS Modeling
This position follows Dominion's hybrid office/work-from-home guidelines and offers opportunities for occasional project field visits as well as participation in relevant industry-related events to enhance skills and knowledge.
