Description

The roles and responsibilities of a Nuclear Operator are derived from Bruce Power's number one value of Safety First. Nuclear Operators are required to perform rounds, routines and safety system tests in all areas within the plant. Operators monitor and maintain the operating status of equipment and systems such as pumps, fans, motors and gauges. This includes controlling system pressures, temperatures, water levels and maintaining the health of equipment. Nuclear Operators, having the highest regard for safety, are responsible for the systems needed to fuel, control and maintain nuclear reactors.

Operators' in-depth knowledge of the plant and its components is acquired through extensive classroom training, on the job training, job performance measures and experiences in the station.

The career path for a Nuclear Operator can lead to various supervisory positions including Supervising Nuclear Operator, Authorized Nuclear Operator, Control Room Operator, Field Shift Operating Supervisor, Control Room Shift Supervisor and Shift Manager.

This is a permanent, full-time position which offers a competitive benefits, compensation and pension package and is located on site in Tiverton, Ontario.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Aptitude for technical learning and ability to transfer technical knowledge to practical applications

  • Proven ability to focus on a broad range of activities, prioritize effectively and see tasks and assignments through to completion

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills in English

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to succeed in a team-based environment

  • This role requires the individual to be able to physically use climbing equipment, work in constricted spaces and wear safety equipment including helmets, breathing apparatus and safety harnesses

  • Demonstrated desire and potential to develop technical and leadership skills

  • Demonstrated commitment to the Bruce Power behaviours, Human Performance tools and Operator Fundamentals

  • Other duties as required

Includes the ability to work effectively under the following working conditions:

  • 12-hour rotating shifts, including weekdays, weeknights, weekends and holidays

  • Exposure to ionizing radiation, requiring the use of appropriate protective equipment and clothing (e.g. fully enclosed, air supplied plastics suit)

  • Industrial setting (indoors & outdoors), requiring the use of appropriate protective equipment and clothing (e.g. hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, respirator, gloves, safety footwear)

  • Heights, vertical ladders, slotted gratings, cramped spaces, confined spaces, noise, extreme temperatures and strong odours

Education and Experience:

  • Completion of a two-year College Technician or Technologist diploma program in Power Engineering, Marine Engineering or other relevant discipline or a bachelor's degree in engineering or science or related disciple is preferred.

  • A Grade 12 diploma from a Secondary School that includes Grade 12U (university preparation) mathematics, physics and chemistry, or Ontario Academic Course (OAC) credits in mathematics, physics and chemistry.

  • Preference for education in Power or Marine Engineering; or University degree in Nuclear, Mechanical, Chemical, Aerospace, or Electrical Engineering; or a university degree in Sciences, Health Sciences, or Environmental Sciences.

  • Having relevant operating and/or CANDU experience is an asset.

  • Applicable experience working in utilities or industrial environments is preferred.
