Summary

Spire is seeking a Manager Director, Insurance to work from its downtown St. Louis (MO) offices. This position has responsibilities for implementing strategies to effectuate risk transfer decisions through insurance programs, as well as managing retention of risk through Spire's captive insurance company, Laclede Insurance Risk Services (LIRS).   Responsibilities for insurance include identifying exposures, assessing risk levels, recommending solutions, implementing approved programs, promoting loss prevention efforts with internal groups, as well as managing relationships with external partners, such as our brokers and underwriters.  Management of the captive involves working with our outside partners to run an insurance company registered in South Carolina, including the development of the strategy, business plan and budget, soliciting options for growth into new lines as well as annual renewals of current lines, coordinating with our actuary, auditor, tax accountant and captive manager to gather and report on financial and operational updates for meetings with the LIRS Board and periodic regulatory filings, as well as monthly processing of claim reimbursement requests.

Duties and Responsibilities

Insurance Programs

  • Accountable for all non-benefit insurance programs, including recommendations for appropriate coverage, annual renewals at favorable rates, and claim notification and reimbursements
  • Manage the insurance renewal process, coverage recommendations, compilation of data and submission of application, update presentations for underwriters, review of binders and policies and submission of tax filings, as well as mid-term and end-of-term true ups for any auditable policies
  • Ensure compliance with and oversee State self-insurance renewal requirements for Auto Liability and Workers Compensation, as well as oversee Spire's surety bond program
  • Periodically review contract insurance requirements, limits and endorsements to support risk transfer, and work with Supply Chain, Legal and the business to review any exception requests
  • Oversee vendor compliance with insurance requirements in our Certificate of Insurance program
  • Coordinate cross-departmental risk assessment and loss control efforts with our insurers, as well as support development of preventive measures with functional areas, including EH&S, Work Comp, Claims, Safety Management Systems, Damage Prevention, Business Continuity, etc.
  • Work with Legal on significant claims that may reach our excess layer, including initial notification, discussion of appropriate reserve levels, and filing of claims for recovery of costs
  • Assess and as appropriate implement Builder's All-Risk for large construction projects, as needed
  • Develop requests for proposal (RFP) for insurance broker and other relevant outside services
  • Attend conferences and webinars, assess whitepapers, surveys, benchmarks and best practices to evolve the program and continue to meet the needs of the organization

Captive

  • Lead the strategic direction and business planning for LIRS, administer policies and renewals, manage claim reporting and reimbursement, and compliance with all regulatory requirements
  • Assess risk capacity and pursue growth opportunities with new lines of coverage, changes in retentions or limits, as well as periodic evaluation of any coverages to eliminate
  • Review monthly loss runs from insurers, reporting from internal claims administration by Work Comp, Claims and Property, and reinsurance payments through our captive manager and Treasury
  • Provide quarterly loss history and exposure updates for actuary, discuss any changes in operations or trends and collaborate with them on the completion of actuarial analysis reports
  • Responsible for leading quarterly LIRS Board meetings and our annual business plan and strategy meeting in South Carolina, including development and presentation of content
  • Meet with the Investment Committee and our investment manager to review past performance and provide guidance on future cash flow requirements and investment strategy
  • Provide support for and review of quarterly tax preparations, as well as annual audit, independent fiduciary review and Department of Insurance annual report
  • Manage outside service providers, including broker, actuary, investment manager, tax and audit
  • Attend conferences and webinars, assess whitepapers, surveys, benchmarks and best practices to evolve the program and continue to meet the needs of the organization

Essential Characteristics

  • Proven work experience as a risk and/or insurance manager (or similar role), with a strong understanding of risk management techniques and insurance strategies
  • Excellent decision-making, negotiation, leadership, and collaboration capabilities, along with very strong analytical skills, knowledge of risk assessment tools and methods
  • Strong proficiency in conceptual risk framework and ability to refine organizational response to current needs and continue to iterate solutions in a collaborative manner as circumstances change
  • Excellent communication and writing skills and the ability to articulate complex concepts at all levels
  • Ability to build strong relationships while maintaining independence
  • Self-starter with a strong work ethic that is unafraid to query, question or constructively challenge

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Supervises a small internal team, as well as management of outside service providers, including brokers, captive manager, investment manager, auditors, actuary and tax professionals.

Required Education (certifications, licenses)

  • BA/BS in Business Management or related area required, with a preference for a major in Risk Management, with a strong preference for candidates with an MBA
  • Risk analysis-oriented certifications such as Certified Risk Manager (CMR), Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC) or similar are preferred.

Required knowledge, skill and abilities

  • 10-15 years' experience in a corporate setting, with preference for those who have functional area responsibility and periodically meet directly with senior management
  • 5-10 years' experience in energy & utility space and risk management strongly preferred
  • Strong general business experience and financial acumen strongly preferred, to include P&L, balance sheets, budgets; experience running a business or division a plus
  • Experience with insurance, claims administration and/or captive insurance a plus

Physical demands, environment and schedule

  • Normal Work Environment - Work is normally performed in a shared office environment.
  • Typically, 8 hours a day, Monday through Friday. Periodic overtime and/or travel is required.
