Description

Position Summary:

Washington Gas is seeking an experienced Vehicle Technician to perform a full range of routine maintenance and repairs on our vehicle fleet, power-operated equipment, compressed natural gas (CNG) systems, compressor stations, and other shop and facility-related equipment.

This role is responsible for adhering to all Washington Gas operating standards, policies, and procedures, as well as local, state, federal, and OSHA requirements. Safe and proper use of tools and equipment is essential.

What You'll Do:
Perform general maintenance and repairs on engines, heavy equipment, automobiles, cranes, and mounted units such as welders and compressors.
Diagnose, disassemble, repair, weld, assemble, and test mechanical components including power steering, air conditioning, anti-slip differentials, and more.
Service electrical systems (e.g., voltage regulators, electric brakes), hydraulic systems (e.g., tailgates, clutches), cooling systems, fuel systems (including CNG, propane, fuel injection), exhaust systems, air compressors, and hoisting mechanisms.
Repair and maintain automatic transmissions (e.g., Allison), diesel engines, ignition systems, transaxles, hydraulic PTOs, and performing front-end alignments.
Conduct state safety and emissions inspections for Maryland and Virginia.

Mount and repair compressors, welders, special bodies, and body components.

Perform field repairs and tow vehicles to the shop as needed.

Install and remove tire chains, maintain batteries and chargers, and perform rough bodywork.

Fabricate and repair seat frames, bodies, and chassis using welding and torch cutting.

Issue parts when the supervisor is unavailable and work independently when required.

Maintain shop equipment, tools, office furniture, and facility equipment.

Instruct other employees on the proper use of automotive equipment, power take-offs, winches, etc.

Balance wheels and tires and repair or change tire and wheel assemblies.


Tools used include a wide variety of hand and power tools, jacks, presses, lifting devices, electrical and pneumatic equipment, computerized testing devices, front-end alignment machines, and tire changing equipment. The technician will also use a computerized transportation system to enter and retrieve data and create work orders.
This role may also support related business and administrative activities such as backend meter processing, corrosion processing, leak/damage prevention, peer safety observations, vehicle clean-out, and cross-functional training.
Shift work, on-call responsibilities, and use of a personal vehicle may be required.
 

What You Have/What You Need:

High School Diploma or GED required.

A combination of five (5) years of recent work experience as an ASE-certified auto or truck mechanic OR graduation from an accredited career/technical institute in the automotive field with at least two (2) years of recent ASE-certified experience, including servicing DOT vehicles.

Licensing & Certifications (Required within 8 months of hire):

Valid CDL driver's license (Class A or B)

DOT Medical Card

Forklift Qualification

ASE Certifications: T8- Medium/Heavy-Duty Truck & G1- Auto Maintenance & Light Repair

Additional certifications as required to perform Maryland and/or Virginia safety and emissions inspections

Other Requirements:

CDL holders are subject to testing under federal highway regulations

Basic computer skills & ability to work independently and safely

Willingness to work shifts, be on-call, and use personal vehicle as needed
