Position Summary

The Civil Engineer or Civil Engineering Associate position holds the responsibility for the safe, reliable, and economic round-the-clock operation of the generation, electric transmission and distribution systems. Duties include Civil Engineering related responsibilities for the design, construction, and maintenance activities of our transmission lines, substations, distribution system, and others.

Tasks and Responsibilities

   Civil design of substation sites to meet drainage, access, and grade requirements

   Coordinate and obtain all necessary permits for Substation and Transmission projects.  

   Designs and/or analyzes structures for Substation, Transmission & Distribution projects. 

   Designs facilities to meet the requirements for EPA Spill Prevention Control and Containment rules. 

   Designs facilities to meet the requirements for Edwards Aquifer Authority and the Texas Commission of Environmental Equality. 

   Directs or participates in surveying to lay out installations and establish reference points, grades and elevations to guide construction. 

   Develops schedules, budgets, and estimates quantities, and cost of materials for projects 

   Analyzes geotechnical reports to determine the adequacy and strength of soil for foundation and pavement design. 

   Analyzes survey reports, maps, drawings, blueprints, aerial photography and other topographical or geologic data to plan projects. 

   Inspects project sites to monitor progress and ensure conformance to design specifications and safety standards. 

   Design foundations (pier and slab) to support Transmission & Substation structures. 

   Actively participates with transmission line routing and siting to include new substations.

   Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Knowledge and Abilities

Approval by Business Unit Executive Leadership, as related to the business need for Engineering Associate 2's without their EIT.

Ability to travel occasionally, to off-site work, to seminars, manufacturing plant inspections, etc.

Proficient in Microsoft Office Package, including word processing, spreadsheets, database, presentation software, electronic mail and scheduling.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Texas Professional Engineer (PE) certification
  • Proficiency in Steel structure design of Transmission and Substation Structures and RISA or similar structural design software
  • Proficiency in Reinforced concrete foundation design
  • Proficiency in Geotechnical engineering with respect to concrete slab & pier foundations and retaining wall design
  • Proficiency in Microstation Inroads/Openroads design software
  • SAP and Project System SAP experience
  • Experience in Transmission and/or Electrical Substation Design or other electric utility engineering
  • Experience modeling transmission lines & structures using the Power Line Systems software suite (i.e. PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE, Tower)
  • Experience with hydraulic & hydrologic model software developed by the US Army Corp of Engineers (e.g. HEC-RAS, HEC-2, HEC-HMS, etc). Experience with similar programs based from the USACE software is also acceptable (i.e. CulvertMaster, FlowMaster, HydroCAD, WRCS, RiverCAD, etc).
