General Summary of Job Responsibilities
The Associate Electrical Engineer is responsible for supporting the engineering and design of the sustainable operation of Consumers Energy distribution system. The incumbent works with teams across the organization and external stakeholders, and works segments of technical projects as required and directed.
An Associate Electrical Engineer in HVD New Business and Capacity Planning is an entry-level position with responsibilities including providing support to many other areas of the company including HVD Engineering, Project Management, System Protection, LVD Substation Planning, Economic Development, Rates and the ESM Group. The Associate Electrical Engineer also helps other members of the team provide solutions to meet our HVD customer's needs and resolve complex technical issues on the HVD system, including new interconnections with generators and with our Transmission provider. The Associate Electrical Engineer is expected to work with significant supervision while learning the tools and methods used in HVD New Business and Capacity Planning, and represent the company and HVD Planning well in all interactions with customers and other areas of the company.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist in the design, control, and implement electrical systems and products
- Designing, maintaining, implementing, or improving electrical instruments, facilities, components, equipment products, or systems for industrial, commercial, or domestic purposes
- Performing a wide range of engineering tasks by operating computer-assisted design or engineering software and equipment
- Writing reports and compiling data regarding existing and potential electrical engineering projects and studies for senior engineer review
- Supports efforts to ensure the installation and operations conform to standards and customer requirements by preparing electrical systems specifications, technical drawings, or topographical maps
- Ensuring compliance with specifications, codes, or customer requirements by taking direction from senior engineers on coordinating installation, manufacturing, construction, maintenance, documentation, support, or testing activities
- Preparing specifications for purchases of electrical equipment and materials and estimating material, labor, or construction costs for budget preparation
- Collaborate with senior level engineers on the gathering of data and feedback from customers, coworkers, and others to discuss existing or potential engineering products or projects
- Adheres to construction, manufacturing, or installation standards or specifications by performing a wide range of detailed calculations
- Other duties as assigned or may be necessary
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Knowledge of applicable codes related to electronic engineering
- Proficient in design and calculation software
- Written and verbal communication skills
- Organizational skills and attention to detail
- Analytical and problem-solving skills
- Knowledge of the theory and practice of electric utility distribution planning, construction, operation, and maintenance.
- Working knowledge of electric utility operation (i.e. generation, transmission and distribution of three phase alternating current power).
- Knowledge of distribution planning principles is an asset.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited university OR Engineering degree from a non-ABET accredited university plus Professional Engineering license with 0 - 2 years in Knowledge of electrical engineering principles
