The Supervisor of Substation Transmission Engineering leads a team of engineers and technical staff responsible for the design, analysis, and support of high-voltage substation projects, large generator interconnection projects, and major customer projects across the APS transmission system. This role ensures engineering deliverables meet safety, reliability, regulatory, and operational standards while aligning with company goals and project timelines. The supervisor also establishes priorities for team members, ensuring efficient resource allocation and timely execution of engineering tasks.
Minimum Requirements
A four-year Bachelors degree in engineering or related applied science discipline (see approved list) from an ABET accredited institution, an International Engineering Alliance (IEA) recognized institution or an ABET Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) or PE registration in electrical engineering from an ABET accredited institution, plus five (5) years of related engineering and design experience.
Approved Engineering degrees:
Materials Science/Metallurgy, Physics, Chemistry, Nuclear, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Electronics, Computer Science, Environmental, Chemical, Structural.
A four-year bachelor of Engineering Technology degree is not considered an automatic equivalent for a B.S. degree in Engineering. A review of the degree program curriculum must be completed by the Engineering Career Path Review Board to determine equivalency level.
Preferred Special Skills, Knowledge or Qualification:
- Professional Engineer registration.
- Demonstrated supervisory experience and ability.
- Possess working knowledge of substation and transmission systems including relay protection, SCADA systems, control houses, and high-voltage equipment.
- Experience managing capital projects, coordinating contractors, reviewing design drawings/specs, and resolving RFIs and change orders.
- Strong process improvement and business focus. Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Internet.
Major Accountabilities
1) Oversee a team of engineers, designers, and technical administrators responsible for the design, review, and
approval of substation engineering plans; Civil/site, above grade, below grade, and controls design packages.
2) Collaborate with multiple business units across T&D; Substation Distribution Engineering, PMO, Major Customer Projects, Interconnection Projects, System Protection, Controls Engineering, Substation Construction and Maintenance, P&C Construction and Maintenance, Transmission Planning Engineering, Operations, etc.
3) Manage a diverse team consisting of three groups: Electrical design engineers, civil design engineers,
apparatus engineers.
4) Provide electrical and civil engineering resource allocations for capital and maintenance projects.
5) Develop department budget and manage department expenditures within approved limits.
6) Foster a culture of safety, innovation, and continuous improvement.
7) Lead efforts to standardize substation engineering practices and design templates.
8) Maintain up-to-date knowledge of new and changing processes, technologies or regulations that may impact
work of team.
9) Provide technical guidance and support to ensure the highest quality project is produced; provides technical direction to ensure the section performs effectively according to sound engineering principles, practices, procedural standards and regulatory requirements.
10) Effectively interfaces with customers and other departments to ensure project objectives are achieved and
costs contained within budget.
