Project Manager II/III - Gas & Oil Power Generation:

Join APS as a Project Manager II/III in Gas & Oil Power Generation, where you'll play a critical leadership role in delivering large-scale, high-impact energy projects. From concept through completion, you'll manage every phase of complex initiatives that fuel our mission of delivering safe, reliable, and sustainable energy. In this role, you'll lead cross-functional teams on multi-year projects with budgets ranging from $2M to $25M, working across multiple departments and external partners. You'll be responsible for driving execution, mitigating risk, and ensuring alignment with enterprise goals while helping shape the future of energy in Arizona and beyond.

Key Skills & Responsibilities:

Strategic Project Leadership - Lead complex Gas & Oil Generation projects through the full lifecycle, from initiation and planning to execution, monitoring, and closure.
Cross-Functional Team Management - Build, guide, and manage teams of 10+ members across departments and business units to ensure collaboration and project alignment.
Stakeholder & Executive Communication - Develop and deliver clear, timely updates to senior executives, enterprise stakeholders, and external partners to drive transparency and buy-in.
Financial Oversight & Budget Management - Manage and control budgets ranging from $2M-$25M, ensuring accurate forecasting, spend tracking, and value delivery.
Risk Assessment & Mitigation - Proactively identify risks and implement mitigation plans to minimize disruption, ensure safety, and keep projects on track.
Execution Planning & Delivery - Create and manage detailed execution plans, timelines, and resource allocations to drive high-quality outcomes within schedule and scope.
Regulatory & Safety Compliance - Ensure all project activities meet industry standards, regulatory requirements, and APS safety protocols particularly in the energy generation sector.
Process Optimization - Continuously seek opportunities to improve project delivery processes, workflows, and cross-functional coordination for greater efficiency and impact.

We're looking for strategic thinkers and leaders who:

Bring 5-10+ years of experience managing large-scale infrastructure, energy, or utility projects ideally within gas or oil generation.
Have led cross-functional teams through complex projects with executive visibility and accountability.
Are fluent in project management methodologies (PMP or equivalent preferred), and you bring both structure and adaptability to the table.
Understand the regulatory and operational landscape of energy generation and can navigate it with ease.
Are a confident communicator who can influence at all levels and keep stakeholders aligned through every phase.

Preferred Special Skills, Knowledge or Qualifications

  • Understanding and experience with the financial aspects of capital projects, including but not limited to, forecasting, cashflows, accruals and earned value methodology.
  • Experience managing multiple medium to large scale projects simultaneously.
  • Extensive understanding of project management processes, principles and methodologies.
  • Comprehensive functional/technical knowledge of the business unit's line of business, practices, and procedures may be preferred or required.
  • Strong critical thinking and creativity skills along with the ability to exercise sound judgment by making decisions based on accurate and timely analyses.
  • Experience with developing schedules on MS Project or PS6 software and how to read and interpret schedules and gantt charts.
  • Experience with writing and interpreting contract language.
  • Experience in directing multi-discipline teams.
  • Demonstrated leadership, project management and organizational skills.
  • Able to understand needs and values of stakeholders and team members and apply that understanding to motivate behaviors and results.
  • Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication, negotiation, and people management skills.
  • Adapts to changing environment, shifting priorities and uncertainty.

Minimum Requirements

Project Manager II - Gas & Oil Power Generation

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Information Systems or related field
  • In lieu of bachelor's degree, a combination of college coursework and experience as a Project Manager or related responsibilities defining and/or managing project scopes, timelines, budgets and delivery equaling four (4) years,
  • Five (5) years related project management experience.

Project Manager III - Gas & Oil Power Generation

  • Bachelors degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Information Systems or related field
  • In lieu of bachelor's degree, a combination of college coursework and experience as a Project Manager or related responsibilities defining and/or managing project scopes, timelines, budgets and delivery equaling four (4) years,
  • Eight (8) years related project management experience.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification required
    • any exception requires Project Management peer group approval, and the employee must acquire PMP certification within 12 months of hire.

Major Accountabilities

1) Plans, monitors, and manages all aspects of large-scale projects including initiation, planning, execution, monitoring, and closure in accordance with internal process methodologies. Ensures completion according to project plan (e.g., scope, schedule, budget).

2) Develops and presents comprehensive project plan to project sponsors, management, executives and external stakeholders. Obtains all necessary internal and external support and approval.

3) Leads or coordinates project planning, resourcing, staffing, progress reporting, people management, vendor relationships and troubleshooting. Negotiates to obtain team members and resources.

4) Monitors performance and recommends schedule changes, cost adjustments or resource additions.

5) Oversees schedules and directs multidisciplinary team resources. Ensures that materials and equipment are delivered on time.

6) Ensures project results meet requirements regarding quality, reliability, schedule and cost.

7) Provides timely and accurate information and status updates to project teams, business management, project sponsors, executive leadership, and external stakeholders.
