City Light has an opportunity for an Electrical Engineering Specialist, Supervisor to support and lead the Joint Use wireline engineering team at the South Service Center. Joint Use is an engineering unit within the Engineering & Technology Operations Division. The supervisor performs all supervisory functions including conducting team and 1:1 meetings, tracking and approving time for the group, and other daily supervisory functions as needed.
Primary duties include:
- Supervising the efforts of assigned engineers
- Reviewing work for construction.
This position will report to the Joint Use & Wood Pole Design Engineering Manager.
Job Responsibilities
Here is more about what you'll be doing:
- Supervise planning, design and modification of overhead and underground electrical systems for the utility's wireline telecommunication customers.
- Ensure that the projects are prioritized and designed properly and promptly, and that appropriate design standards and sound engineering principles are used.
- Review cost estimates, customer construction drawings, customer requirements documents, service installation drawings and material requirements according to design guidelines and standards.
- Train the team on processes and software, to include CAD, IKE4, SCL Standards and SpidaCalc/Studio.
- Review work packages prepared by wireline engineering team.
- Perform continuous process improvement to ensure the unit delivers engineering products in the most efficient manner possible.
- Application of National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) rules with a focus on clearances, strengths, and loadings.
- Perform special projects as assigned by the manager.
- Mentor and train new engineers.
- Coach engineers about electrical design and safety.
- Perform Plan Review of SDOT and private Street Use projects as they impact City Light and telecommunications infrastructure.
- Act as a Subject Matter Expert in the development or revision of City Light construction, material, and design standards.
- Provide electrical engineering design support to other Seattle City Light units as well as other City of Seattle departments, Suburban cities, and outside agencies.
Qualifications

Requires five years electrical engineering experience, including two years supervisory experience and an Associate Degree in Electrical Engineering (or a combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class).
Desired Qualifications - You will be successful if you have the following experience, skills, and abilities:
- Experience working with Distribution or Joint Use engineering.
- Experience with current pole engineering practices and standards.
- Knowledge of and direct experience with CAD, NESC, SCL Standards, IKE4, and
- SpidaCalc/Studio.
- Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, property descriptions, construction schedules, contracts, and other construction documents.
- Good interpersonal, technical writing and oral communications skills.
- Willingness to learn and accept responsibility, comply with safety rules and regulations, work efficiently, effectively, and independently
