Job Summary

There is one position available which will be filled at the level commensurate with the successful candidates' education, experience, knowledge skills, and abilities.

This position plays a lead role in forecasting company's electric system peak demand, energy and sales. This position is primarily focused on researching, interpreting, and forecasting customer electric usage within the Dominion Energy service territory.  The successful candidate will maintain and enhance complex economic models which provide essential business information such as historical and predictive analysis of class and end-use sales. The work to be performed requires the use of applied techniques that span the academic disciplines of economics, statistics, mathematics, and computer programming.  The successful applicant will be expected to mine large volumes of historical billing data (including AMI data) and transform that data into useful information that will help explain customer electric usage over time and how those patterns are impacted by Demand Side Management (DSM), Energy Efficiency (EE), and electrification.

The successful candidate will answer interrogatory requests associated with both Virginia and South Carolina Public Service Commission hearings and associated filings and serve as a Company witness, as needed, during those hearings.

Additionally, the responsibilities would include company's sales and revenue forecasting and analysis, including variance explanation.   

Specific responsibilities include the following: 

  • Maintain and enhance complex economic models which provide essential business information such as historical and predictive analysis of class and end-use sales.  
  • Analyze electric load drivers such as datacenters, electric vehicles, rooftop solar, Demand Side Management (DSM), Energy Efficiency (EE), and electrification.
  • Maintain, enhance, and develop analytic tools, data processes and methods to analyze and present load research and forecast results.  
  • Ability to communicate, present, and defend analysis and forecasting methodologies in an aggressive environment.
  • Mine large volumes of historical billing data (including AMI data) and transform that data into useful information that will help explain customer electric usage over time.  
  • Support sales and revenue budget development and variance reporting.  
  • Ability to apply advanced statistical, mathematical, and econometric modeling techniques to solve complex problem.
  • Provide full support of regulatory matters related to the load forecast, including answering discovery requests associated with regulatory filings and serving as the Company's witness during hearings and other regulatory proceedings.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

Senior Economist:  5+ years of directly related experience;

Lead Economist:  7+ years of directly related experience:

Note:   A Master's degree will count as one year towards the experience requirement.  A partial year of experience of six months or more will be rounded up to one year.

  • Experience with electric utility forecasting is desired for Senior Economist level; For Lead Economist level, utility forecasting is required
  • Full knowledge of concepts and applications of statistical analysis, econometrics, and economics or demography;
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills;
  • Proficiency in the use of one or more major statistical analysis software platforms such as R, Python,  SAS, or MetrixND; use of the SQL query language and relational databases;
  • Previous experience serving as a witness in regulatory proceedings is desired;
  • Knowledge of building data dashboards using tools such as Power BI or Tableau;
  • Understanding of sales and revenue variance reporting techniques and approaches;
  • Strong oral and written communication skills. 

Education Requirements

Degree or an equivalent combination of education and demonstrated related experience may be accepted in lieu of preferred level of education:  Bachelor or Master
