What does a Battery Energy Storage Technician do for us?
The Battery Energy Storage Technician maintains and operates Idaho Power battery energy storage systems (BESS) and associated electrical substation equipment. The BESS technician inspects work performed by contractors on BESS sites and ensures contractors are following applicable safety practices, technical specifications, and compliance requirements while on site. The BESS technician responds to BESS operational and emergency alarms during and outside regular business hours as part of a 24/7 on call rotation.

A COMPETITIVE CANDIDATE WILL HAVE
Knowledge of:
- OSHA 1910.269
- Chemicals and hazards (chemical safety)
- Substation operations, battery energy storage system operations and maintenance, AC & DC controls, system protection equipment, communications and SCADA systems, company regulations and policies
Skills in:
- Organizing and managing time
- Maintaining interpersonal and business relationships, working well with employees from all areas of the company
- Trouble shooting and data analysis
- Oral and written communication
- Working in proximity to energized circuits
- Maintaining mechanical and electrical equipment
Ability to:
- Take clearances and perform switching
- Read and understand electrical drawings
- Operate forklifts, operate and maintain substation and BESS apparatus
- Use good judgement in making critical system operating decisions
- Travel daily in region
- Work on call duty
- Resolve conflicts
- Be self-motivated and flexible
- Work independently and establish positive working relationships with other team members
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education:
- High school diploma or GED
AND
- Associates or Vocational degree in electronics, or a mechanical maintenance discipline
OR
- State recognized Journeyman Electrician License
OR
- Completion of a related formal apprenticeship training program recognized by the Department of Labor Office of Apprenticeship
OR
- An equivalent combination of education and work experience, or military training
Experience:
- 5 or more years of experience in an electrical, mechanical, maintenance, operation, or construction field, including at least 3 years in the electric power industry
Preferred:
- At least 1 year of BESS experience
Licenses & Certifications:
- Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record
- Must obtain CPR/First Aid within 90 days of hire
Preferred:
- Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
- Department of Transportation (DOT) Medical Card
- Manufacturer certification to work on Powin, Sungrow, Mitsubishi, and/or Tesla BESS systems
- Certification to work on SMA inverters
