Summary
The Underground Damage Prevention Technician role is responsible for accurately identifying and marking underground facilities including electric, water, communications, and gas to ensure safety and regulatory compliance. The role also involves accurately documenting ticket information and providing detailed responses to internal and external excavators to prevent delays in excavation activities throughout SRP's service territory. This role requires a keen eye for detail, strong problem-solving skills, a commitment to working and driving safely, and the ability to work independently and safely in diverse outdoor environments including heavily congested construction sites.
What You'll Do
- Uses specialized electronic equipment to detect and mark underground utilities such as electrical, gas, water, and telecommunications (fiber).
- Read and interpret utility maps and geographic information system (GIS) to identify type and location of overhead and underground facilities.
- Receive, document, and close out excavation notices using electronic ticket management system.
- Maintain detailed records of all locates, including maps, photographs, sketches, and written reports for comprehensive descriptions, as required by the specific situation.
- Adhere to all safety protocols and regulations to prevent damage to underground utilities and ensure the safety of the public and SRP work crews.
- Coordinate and communicate effectively with contractors, other utility representatives, and other stakeholders to provide clear and accurate information regarding utility locations.
- Regularly inspect and maintain all equipment and tools to ensure they are in optimal working condition.
- Identify and resolve issues related to utility locates, such as discrepancies in data sources or unexpected obstacles.
- Respond to emergency excavation notices and provide on-site support to prevent damage to underground utilities.
- Educate contractors, homeowners, and other stakeholders on safe excavation practices and damage prevention protocols.
- Regularly inspect and maintain all equipment and tools to ensure they are in optimal working condition.
What It Takes To Succeed
- Previous experience in utility locating or a related field is preferred.
- Proficiency with locating equipment and software, such as electromagnetic locators.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in marking and documenting utility locations.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and perform physical tasks such as walking, bending, and lifting.
- Knowledge of SRP's coordinate system
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage a high volume of locate tickets effectively and efficiently.
- Ability to maintain a safe driving and safety record
- Ability to work independently with minimal direct supervision
Experience
At entry Level, 1 year related experience is required. Promotion to Senior Level requires 3 years experience with at least one year at SRP or contingent as Underground Damage Prevention Technician and fully competent in all aspects of locating and managing assignments and would be recognized as an expert in area of assignment and may have periodic or occasional lead responsibilities. Experience in construction or locating underground facilities or experience working on SRP's Distribution System as a Tradeshelper, Groundman, Operator, Truckdriver, Apprentice, Mapper/Drafter or construction experience.
