To help achieve our business plans, Bruce Power currently has an opportunity for a Senior Technical Specialist in the MCR Engineering Department, MCR Tooling Design Engineering.

This is a permanent, full-time position which offers a competitive benefits, compensation and pension package and is located on site in Tiverton, Ontario.

What will you be responsible for?

In this role, you will be part of a team of design engineers responsible for performing engineering activities associated with design.  You will be ensuring that design activities are completed in accordance with required standards, legislation, or regulations and in compliance with Bruce Power Design Management processes and procedures.  You will be working as part of a cross functional team, including our vendor partners and project engineers, to ensure that MCR Tooling is designed, constructed, tested, and deployed in line with design requirements and technical specifications. You may also be requested to provide expert advice to execution teams to solve any tooling related issues during MCR execution. Specific Responsibilities:

  • Prepare technical specifications for engineering services and work with engineering service providers for engineering analysis as required in support of planned or emergent work.

  • Review and accept design products on behalf of Bruce Power produced by our vendor partners.

  • Prepare/verify/revise design basis documentation and maintain design basis configuration. This includes, but is not limited to, design plans, design requirements, design specifications, design calculations / reports, P&IDs.

  • Support Project Engineers, Field Execution Teams, Vendors and other organizations to address design and execution technical issues with tooling systems.

  • Review existing analyses and extract relevant information.

  • Recommend improvements / opportunities based on lessons learned and operating experience.

  • Provide innovative solutions to tooling design challenges presented to support our Major Component Replacement program.

  • Provide ownership and technical expertise for your assigned tooling systems.

  • Ensure configuration control of your assigned tooling systems through the application of our Engineering Change Control Process.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Experience working in a project team environment.

  • Experience with complex tooling design/construction/operation. Preference will be given to candidates with CANDU reactor refurbishment experience or with experience in the application of tooling in an ionizing radiation environment.

  • Familiarity with the application of V-Model approach to tooling development.

  • Familiarity with reactor and tooling aging mechanisms and their implications to tooling performance and outage impacts.

  • Demonstrated ability to achieve task results consistent with requirements for safety, quality, quantity, and resource allowance.

  • Good comprehension, written and verbal and presentation skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to interact positively with others within a diverse project team by developing trust, mutual respect, and co-operative working relationships.

  • Demonstrated ability to apply fundamental engineering principles to tooling design. General materials knowledge would be an asset.

  • Demonstrated ability to plan, prioritize and organize work to meet objectives.

  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to changing priorities, deadlines, and heavy workloads.

  • Demonstrated attention to detail and accuracy.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, take initiative, and be self-motivated.

  • Proven ability to write technical documentation.

  • A history of demonstrating strong analytical, problem solving, and decision-making capability.

  • A high degree of initiative, self-motivation, flexibility, and the ability to work with minimal guidance in a team environment.

  • Willingness to travel to vendor facilities on occasion to support design/construction/testing of tooling.

  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to apply practical engineering solutions and be adaptable to transition between the office, test and field environments.

  • General knowledge of mechanical processes such as cutting, joining, forming and fabricating is an asset

Education and Experience:

  • Completion of a 4-year bachelor's university degree in Engineering is required. Mechanical, Control or Electrical Engineering is an asset. 

  • A period of over 6 years and up to and including 8 years is considered necessary to gain this experience.

  • P.Eng designation, or the ability to obtain a P.Eng designation is an considered an asset.
