Description
Reporting to the Manager, Environmental Programs, the Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Associate provides support to the EHS team in carrying out duties and providing legal and technical knowledge to support sound decisions. The incumbent is responsible for the drafting, development and implementation of environment, health & safety programs and procedures (e.g. asbestos, lead, and spill response programs), investigating employee concerns, presenting EHS training, conducting industrial hygiene and environmental sampling.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conducts audits, inspections, and investigations at worksites under various environmental conditions following the guidance and direction of EHS Consultants and Managers.
- Prepares detailed written technical EHS reports in a timely manner.
- Prepares detailed technical EHS reports on topics such as biological monitoring, industrial hygiene, and internal performance.
- Conducts research on EHS programs, policies, and legislation, providing recommendations as needed.
- Develops, reviews, or modifies EHS programs, procedures and other documents for review by EHS team.
- Supports implementation of programs including the development and delivery of related training materials.
- Researches and interprets legal and other EHS requirements.
- Leads or supports various EHS related projects or initiatives.
- Investigates and problem solves EHS related concerns.
- Consults with and builds relationships with client groups to assess risks and improve EHS programs.
- Conducts data analysis for incidents and department metrics.
- Assists with filing required incident reports to regulatory agencies (e.g., MECP, MLITSD).
- Conducts industrial hygiene sampling and related environmental monitoring activities.
- Researches and stays updated on health and safety best practices, legislative changes, and industry trends.
- Monitors, updates, and verifies compliance with safety and environmental legislation.
- Supports EHS management systems (ISO 14001, 45001) through audits, continual improvement, employee engagement, and risk assessments.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's/Undergraduate degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- Minimum of two (2) to three (3) years of progressive, full time Environmental Health & Safety or industrial hygiene experience
- Preference given to candidates pursuing or holding certifications such as:
- Certified Registered Safety Professional (CRSP)
- Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST)
- Environmental Professional (EP)
- Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)
- Registered Occupational Hygienist (ROH)
- Valid class G driving license.
- Postgraduate Certificate/Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety or Environmental Science is an asset.
- Educational/ field experience associated with EHS activities (e.g., audits, hazard assessment, air sampling).
- Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and Environmental Protection Act (EPA) regulations
- Knowledge of EHS audits, inspections, and investigation processes.
- Knowledge of environmental monitoring programs
- Excellent problem solving and analytical skills.
