Description
Primary Purpose

Develop and maintain the organization's ongoing relationships with regulatory commissions and authorities. This includes coordinating and conducting assessments of internal controls to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, developing programs and processes to manage and resolve complaint cases brought to regulatory authorities, and implementing process improvements to prevent future complaints. Monitor regulatory activities and provide guidance to internal teams on complex regulatory strategies, prioritize regulatory efforts, and represent the company in industry trade associations. Additionally, the role involves advancing the organization's positions with internal and external parties and preparing and sponsoring testimony to governmental or regulatory agencies.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintains working relations with FERC Commissioners and staff, Administration officials; Departmental staff, including DOE, EPA, PHMSA, and Congressional staff.
  • Tracks and gathers intelligence on the activities and direction of the regulatory agencies, including FERC.
  • Monitors all interaction with the FERC and federal agencies to ensure consistency with Sempra's policies and objectives.
  • Advocates Sempra's positions with key government contacts, including those at relevant federal agencies.
  • Leads coordination efforts across Corporate and Operating Company teams to influence viewpoints on regulatory matters, as well as strategies to be pursued at the FERC and relevant federal agencies.
  • Prioritizes Sempra's regulatory efforts and activities before the FERC and relevant federal agencies.
  • Guides Corporate and Operating Company leadership and subject matter experts.
  • Represents Company interests within various industry trade associations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education

Bachelor's degree in legal, business, social policy, public relations, politics, related field, or equivalent experience is required.  

Experience 

  • 10 years of federal government, public agencies, lobbying, or related experience is required.
  • 5 years of FERC or energy/utilities regulatory-related work experience is preferred.
  • Must reside in the greater Washington DC area or be willing to relocate upon hire.
  • We offer a hybrid work environment.  Although the schedule may vary, typically this will allow you to work from the office three days per week and work remotely on the remaining workdays.

Skills and Abilities 

  • A strong track record of building strong teams, as well as leading/influencing through others and gaining cooperation and support is required.
  • Advance knowledge of federal regulations impacting the energy industry and proposed federal or regional regulations is required.
  • Persuasive oral communications skills necessary for dealing with a wide range of internal and external audiences is required.
  • Must possess strong ability to communicate (written and verbal) complex technical concepts in business terms.
  • Takes a broad perspective and considers long-term implications when making business decisions and setting strategies.
  • Requires a demonstrated ability to think strategically.
  • Capable of anticipating and considering the needs, concerns, and input of various internal and external stakeholders.
  • Possesses a strong ability to develop and implement solutions to overcome obstacles.
  • Requires advanced presentation skills for formal and informal presentations to Senior Management
