Position Description

Seattle City Light is seeking a licensed Professional Electrical Engineer to join our Joint Use and Wood Pole design teams as a lead engineer. In this role, you will prepare the most complex designs for a variety of pole replacement designs and Joint Use projects. You will also provide technical training and mentoring for the junior members of the Joint Use and Wood Pole Design teams, including review of the other engineers' work, proper approval and PE stamping of over 300 work orders produced annually. You may also supplement the review of consultant work products. This position will report to the Joint Use & Pole Design Manager.

Job Responsibilities

Here is more about what you'll be doing:  

  • Supports the engineering efforts of Joint Use Engineering and the Wood Pole Design Team
  • Uses PE credentials to endorse work package designs prior to construction
  • Trains assigned engineers in current or future technology to comply with work practices and procedures, ensuring conformance with the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) and SCL Standards
  • Reviews, redlines, and approves engineering work products submitted by consultants or other outside agents
  • Trains and mentors SCL engineers and consultants in the use of IKE4, SpidaCalc/Studio, CADD, SCL Standards, NESC and other engineering applications and tools
  • Completes the most complex engineering assignments and pole line layouts

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: In addition to the skills and experience mentioned below, a successful applicant will have experience that reflects a commitment to creating fair and equitable outcomes and has: 
Education: A Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering.
Experience: Total of 6 years of progressively responsible, difficult and highly complex electrical engineering experience in the Power Industry (or other combinations of education and/or experience which provide preparation to do professional electrical engineering work on major electrical power systems).
 
Work Environment/Physical Demands:
May be required to work nights, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays. Overnight travel may be required.
 
License, Certification and Other Requirements:
Current Washington State driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility. Professional Engineer state licensure within the United States and up to 12 months after appointment to attain State of Washington registration.
 
Desired Qualifications - You will be successful if you have the following experience, skills, and abilities:  

  • Knowledge of overhead and underground electrical distribution design and/or other related electrical service work
  • Experience working at an electric utility with specific experience with overhead distribution design or Joint Use engineering
  • Experience with current pole engineering practices and standards
  • Knowledge of and experience with CADD, NESC, SCL Standards, IKE4, and SpidaCalc/Studio
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, property descriptions, construction schedules, contracts, and other construction documents
  • Experience coaching/mentoring other employees
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
  • Willingness to learn and accept responsibility, comply and enforce safety rules and regulations.
  • Ability to work efficiently, effectively, and independently
