What does a Safety Professional I or II do for us?
A Safety Professional leads Idaho Power Company (IPC) safety processes in collaboration with regional and area business leaders and assists with the development and implementation of comprehensive company-wide safety processes.
Additional job duties include:
- Using qualitative and quantitative analysis to evaluate hazards to identify what events can occur, the likelihood of occurrence, severity of results, risk (a combination of probability and severity) and costs
- Identifying appropriate controls and their cost and effectiveness, controls may involve administrative controls such as plans, policies, procedures, training, etc.) and engineering controls (such as safety features and systems, fail-safe features, barriers, and other forms of protection)
- Making recommendations to regional business leaders, designers, government agencies and others
- Implementing, overseeing, coaching, and evaluating the proactive safety processes within the business region including comprehensive assessment and behavioral safety processes
- Investigating public incidents as required (Electrical contracts, fires, and serious injury or fatality events)
- Assuring effective investigation processes that determine direct, indirect, and root causes as well as practical solutions to prevent recurrence for events that did or may cause injury
- Representing the company in litigated cases with guidance and support from IPC's Legal Department
- Monitoring internal safety compliance with our code of business conduct daily, and during incident reviews
- Reporting and participating in investigations for business code of conduct safety-related issues
- Developing and presenting classroom and hands-on safety and safety-related skills training within Idaho Power and for the public and other outside entities
- Coaching regional management and leadership on safety management techniques and employees on relevant safety aspects
- Assuring regulatory compliance with federal, state, local regulations, and company policy
- Serving as a liaison with regulatory agencies
- Understanding the application of ergonomics
- Utilizing an understanding of human physiology, ergonomics principles, and regulatory guidelines to minimize injurious or repetitive stress to the workforce
- Understanding Industrial Hygiene: calibrate and utilize air sampling equipment (both passive and active)
- Calibrating and utilizing a variety of direct reading instruments and equipment to evaluate chemical, biological, radiological, and physical health hazards
- Performing annual certifications as required on LEV systems such as laboratory hoods using anemometers
- Evaluating results and recommend appropriate controls

A COMPETITIVE CANDIDATE WILL HAVE
Knowledge of:
- Federal, state, and local regulatory safety standards, including Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Department of Transportation (DOT)
- The IPC Safety Manual
- Human Resources safety policies and working rules
- Occupational safety/health at the professional level
Skills in:
- Written and verbal communication and presentation skills
Ability to:
- Plan, develop, and implement safety programs
- Assess problems, resolve conflict, and make recommendations to leadership on safety initiatives
- Effectively manage multiple projects using process and performance improvement methodology, project management, and an understanding of team dynamics and team building

- Demonstrate follow-through on customer inquiries regarding safety programs, policies, processes, and best work practices
- Recognize complex matters that require additional guidance and escalates as necessary
- Interact with regulatory and other state and federal agencies and with all levels of employees
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Safety Professional I
Education:
- Associate degree in related field or equivalent combination of education and experience
Preferred:
- Bachelor's degree in Safety, Education, or Industrial Engineering, or a related field
Experience:
- 2 years of safety-related experience
Licenses & Certifications:
- Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record based on driving requirements for the position
- Must obtain First Aid/CPR card within 90 days
Preferred:
- Certified Utility Safety Administrator (CUSA) certification, Occupational Safety and Health Technologist (OHST) or equivalent
Safety Professional II
Education:
- Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health, Safety, Engineering or a related field
OR
- An equivalent combination of education and safety experience in the utility industry
OR
- Completion of a journeyman training program in line work, stations, metering, power plant operations, or an equivalent journeyman level program
Preferred:
- Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health, Safety, Engineering or related field
Experience:
- 4 years of professional safety experience
OR
- 2 or more years of experience as a Journeyman Lineman, Stations Technician, Meter Technician, Power Plants, or equivalent journeyman position
Preferred:
- 5 years of professional safety related work experience with preference given for safety experience in the utility business and/or Journeyman experience as a Lineman, Stations, Power Plant, or as a Meter Technician
Licenses & Certifications:
- Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record based on driving requirements for the position
- Must obtain First Aid/CPR card within 90 days
Preferred:
- Occupational Health and Safety Technologist (OHST) or Certified Utility Safety Professional (CUSP)
